I'm still not exactly sure who really won. Best Picture. And I did watch it. The award show, I mean.

They gave the Best Picture award to La La Land, then took it back and gave it to Moonlight instead! Apparently somebody gave presenter Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope. They should find out if Steve Harvey was backstage. Or maybe Kanye West.

I kind of wondered if the La La people were having an Adele Moment, but apparently not.

John Travolta on a diff award show recently demonstrated rather elegantly that he can't see teleprompters for whazza, saying as much, & then "I'm going to read from the card". Which explains away his fiasco with Idina Menzel's name on that previous show.

But apparently they handed Beatty the wrong card. So how did the non-winners get the right card?

How did Bonnie & Clyde end up with Emma Stone's winning envelope? How could you send out the presenters with the wrong envelope? A monumental screw-up. Being on the West Coast I like to imagine those on the East who heard the winner announced and immediately went to bed.

They'll be in for quite the surprise tomorrow.

Imagine if the mistake had been in reverse?

It will be fun to hear the ladies on The View and Wendy Williams tomorrow.

What happened was that someone put a copy of the Best Actress winner card in the envelope they gave to Warren Beatty. It said "Emma Stone: La La Land." Beatty was understandably confused when he opened the envelope (most people probably thought he was kidding to drag out the suspense) and he showed it to Faye Dunaway before Faye read off the winner.

One thing's for sure. This moment is going to go down in Oscar history.

The topic of what would happen if a presenter said the wing name has come up plenty of times. I thought I read it where PriceWaterhouseCoopers were standing by to validate the winners, and if someone ever said the wrong name, there was an actual siren ready to stop the show and get it corrected.

I didn't hear any siren, but I definitely noticed a hubbub of activity of guys rushing the stage and various people in the La La Land group. Then a guy with a clipboard came in from the right and said there had been a problem.

I'm just glad that it was very obvious that Beatty / Dunaway did not read the card incorrectly. That kind of mistake would make for a long-lasting bad memory that could overshadow two long and distinguished film careers.

Per them, the envelopes are handed to the presenters by the two PwC partners who by themselves make up the entire vote tabulating team. They are the only two who know who the winners are, what the votes were. They would be the only ones to stuff the envelopes and put them in the brief cases. There are two copies of each award, separated and carried in two separate brief cases (in case something happens to one of them, or the partners on the way to the show).

If both briefcases show up safely, as the did, then only one should be opened and used. What we don't know yet is if:

1) Both Best Actress envelopes were put in briefcase A and both Best Picture were put in briefcase B leaving the final envelope in briefcase A a complete duplicate and the partner did not read the envelope before giving it to Beatty

or

2) the Best Picture envelope for briefcase A had the second version of the Best Actress winner card and in briefcase B was the same mix-up with the Best Actress envelope containing the Best Picture winner. In other words, the mistake happened prior to the ceremony when the partners were stuffing the envelope.

There are a couple other scenarios such as misprinting (printing 1 Best Picture and 3 Best Actress cards) but I doubt those happened.

For Warren Betty's sake I hope it is #2 above as his only mistake was not questioning the contents because he and Faye knew what award they were giving and if the envelope actually said "Best Actress Winner" on the outside, they should have seen/read that first. Either way, I will not fault him.

The best picture envelope disaster wasn’t the only Oscars flub on Sunday night.

During the In Memoriam segment, a wrong photo was used during the rundown of celebrities who have died this past year.

Instead of a photo of costume designer Janet Patterson, the image of producer Jan Chapman was mistakingly used.

Patterson was a four-time Oscar nominee who died in October, while Chapman is still alive and recently worked on The Babadook (Both were Australian, so at least Oscar producers got the continent right).

Chapman issued a statement to Variety: “I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson. I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered … Janet was a great beauty and four-time Oscar nominee and it is very disappointing that the error was not picked up. I am alive and well and an active producer.”

The tribute reel was also criticized for omitting a few names — though that seems to happen every year — including Garry Shandling and Florence Henderson (though, to be fair, both were best known for television roles). Bill Paxton, who died over the weekend, wasn’t present the reel but was honored by presenter Jennifer Aniston prior to the segment.

As for that other mistake: During the best picture presentation, Faye Dunaway read that La La Land had won the night’s top honor. In actuality, Moonlight was the winner, setting off chaos inside the Dolby Theatre. The Academy’s accountants issued a statement to clarify what went wrong during the best picture presentation.

I've seen a still that I believe to be genuine. The outside of the envelope in his hand said Best Actress in a Leading Role. He obviously knew that something was wrong but didn't think to check the outside of the envelope to confirm that what he'd been handed is what he expected. Hard to fault him for that. --Bob

He didn't even have to check the outside of the envelope. It says Best Actress on the bottom of the card. He says he saw it, and thought maybe it was a misprint. I think he was showing the card to Faye Dunaway so she could see what the problem was, and he didn't expect her to just read it out loud.

Also, I haven't heard anyone mention that you can hear an exchange between Beatty and Dunaway a few seconds after the announcement, but it's hard to make out through the applause and the music. The italicized words are my best guesses for the unintelligible part:

Beatty: Look. It says Emma Stone.
Dunaway: What?

The tone of her "What?" is clearly indicating that she can't hear him, not that she's surprised or shocked.
