I think this is my favorite example, so far , of the urban sociological examinations of rural Trump voters.
Politico Goes to a Wisconsin Trump county and talks to people just like themselves. Liberal urbanites who have moved to a rural county.
Main Theme of the article-"I can't believe my neighbors are so hateful."
I really like the section of the article on the landowner who beat up the Hmong trespasser. I always thought that liberals were big on context and nuance and so forth.
This anecdote in isolation sounds absolutely horrible. What a racist redneck that 43-YO is.
>>>>He talked about an incident two years ago in which a 64-year-old Laotian Hmong man from an adjacent county was out hunting squirrels and wandered into the woods on the land of a 43-year-old local, who saw him, attacked him and nearly beat him to death. The incident inflamed tensions about race and outsiders. <<<<<
To put things in a little context-a few years ago a Hmong deer hunter shot and killed 6 Wisconsin deer hunters in the woods. That incident is obviously in the back of everybody's mind in incidents like this.
I think my favorite part of the whole article is how the Hmong man peacefully "wandered into the woods on the land of a 43-year-old local" who then nearly beat him to death.
My informed guess about how things have been going in areas like this is that the landowner in question has likely dealt with an endless string of Hmong trespassers and finally snapped in this case.
