ABC's '500 Questions' Likely Cancelled

Robert Mills, ABC's Senior Vice President for Alternative Series, Specials and Late-Night, was interviewed for BuzzerBlog over the holidays. While the focus of the interview was largely on the success of that Sunday night block from last summer, Mills was asked at one point about whether the genius-quizzer, which got bogged down a bit in its second season by MasonJenningsGate last summer, would get a third season:
...Probably not on 500 Questions ... I love a question-and-answer game show. I hoped we were going to get there with 500 Questions. We didn’t quite hit the mark. I was happy we did, but I don’t think we’ll get to season 3. In theory, it should’ve worked, and it got close, but it was just missing one or two pistons that just weren’t firing...
Pretty sure those two pistons were named Richard Mason (first season defending champ who wasn't invited back) and Ken Jennings (struck out in just four questions, some speculated, in protest at Mason getting the boot).
Once again, ABC drops the ball. Tsk, except for those Sunday shows (one of which returns later this week), they're just a Mickey Mouse outfit now i.m.o..
(drum rim shot)
Other input from Mills:
Upcoming Gong Show revival: (series creator and original host) Chuck (Barris) is not involved, no, but I know he’s very excited about the reboot, so we’re going to try to do right by him.
Possible timeslot changes: ...Certainly, the natural flow would seem to be ($100K) Pyramid at 8, (Celebrity) Family Feud at 9, Match Game at 10, because Pyramid is about the safest one of all of them, and then it gets a little more risqué.
