4. HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE=THE BEATLES (1966)
Album: Revolver
With all of the Beatles songs in their portfolio of classics, this might seem an odd choice to be (almost) my favorite one. I mean, the intricacy of so
many of their creations, the new ground they were consistently breaking..but sometimes, simplicity just flat out works. McCartney doesn't reinvent
the wheel here, it's just a simple, and enormously beautiful melody, with sparse instrumentation, backed with (here's that word again) simple but
emotionally uplifting harmonies. True, the Beatles' harmonies on things such as "Because", for instance, are far more complicated and creative than
what is on display here, but these are perfect for what the song needs. This was especially driven home to me by a track included on one of the cd
singles released in conjunction with the "anthology" projects of a few years ago. It had several different takes of this song, edited together,
starting with an early version, with each segment that followed being a later take demonstrating how the song took shape over the course of its creation.
In the last verse, the harmonies finally kick in, and right at that moment you realize how crucial they are to the quality of the piece. Bottom line,
though..I could have saved all of that silly analysis and just put it this way: it's a beautiful little tune, and it touches my heart. Audio link only..
