The Boney 500: Songs 42 and 41

Both of today's songs come from the 60's, and neither are by the Beatles, believe it or not!
42. CALIFORNIA GIRLS-THE BEACH BOYS (1965)
Album: Summer Days (And Summer Nights!)
If you are someone who thinks of this as just another of the group's beach or surfing songs, I urge you to listen more
closely...put on some headphones if you have to. It may seem like a simple song, but it is an incredibly complex
composition, especially in the opening segment, which raised the bar for pop music, even giving the Beatles something
to think about. Once again, the harmony arrangements are without peer...great throughout, but just listen to the closing
moments. And yet, despite all of my blathering about its artistic merits, the most important thing is...it's
just a wonderful, supremely catchy tune. But simple? Ummmm....no.
41. YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BE SO NICE-THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL (1966)
Album: Daydream
This song just makes me wanna go "awwwww". So sweet and gentle, a really lovely melody and I love the vocal counterpoint.
The feeling that comes out of this song is one of the innocence of your first crush.
We enter the Top 40 on Monday!!
