RIP Ralph Branca

#1 Post by Vandal » Wed Nov 23, 2016 10:18 am

Ralph Branca's baseball life will always be defined by one pitch.

Branca, who gave up a home run to the Giants' Bobby Thomson, the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" that cost the Brooklyn Dodgers the 1951 National League pennant, has died at the age of 90.

The moment I saw this, I heard in my head "the Giants win the pennant, the Giants win the pennant, the Giants....."

Because I just have to.

And, before one of the game show buffs beats me to the punch, Branca appeared as a contestant on Concentration in 1963 and was quite successful, winning 17 games and playing in the Challenge of Champions.

I watched the entire video. My mother appeared on Concentration near the end of 1964 or in early '65. I did not expect to see her, but I was hoping to see Hugh Downs give away the lovely parting gift, a matched set of American Tourister luggage. I wanted to find out what sorts of superlatives he might have used to invest these ugly and heavy suitcases with the magic that made them such a treasure to her 50 years later.
That remains a mystery.
