24. COSMO'S FACTORY-CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL (1970)

No greatest hits albums were considered for inclusion on this list. Number one, that would be cheating. Number two, most greatest hits
albums do not coincide with my idea of an artist's best material anyway. So on first glance at the track listing for this album, you
might think I've violated my own rule. But no, this was a regular album. Thing is, most of CCR's singles were "double-sided hits", meaning
both sides of the single made the charts. There are three of them here, PLUS their cover of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", which
got a ton of FM radio airplay. Throw in a couple of excellent rockabilly covers and the kick butt opener "Ramble Tamble", and you have
one awesome "greatest hits album that's not actually a greatest hits album".

I was a member, in good standing, of the Columbia House Record Club. I joined specifically to get reel-to-reel vs. albums. They had the best selection. Cosmo's Factory was probably the closest to getting worn out on my Sony r2r player. My favorite song on the album was and still is "Long As I Can See the Light". Second up is "Who'll Stop the Rain", but only if using headphones.

An excellent all around album. Most of their songs (with the obvious exception of I Heard it Through the Grapevine) clock in at under 3 minutes. Travelin' Band is barely 2 minutes long! Fogerty wasn't much for lengthy guitar solos, if any.

I also had a Sony Reel-to-Reel but my dealings with Columbia House were of the vinyl and 8-Track variety. Last I knew, there were still some tapes in my parents' (now my brother's) attic, but the Reel-t-Reel bit the dust years ago. There is one tape in particular of a long rehearsal of the band I was in when I was around 13, which was actually pretty good for our ages (13, 13, 15, 15, and 19). There was also a tape of a memorable jam session the summer before college started featuring much drinking and therefore much hilarity and tremendously inept playing. I would love to hear these tapes again.

Get in, say your peace, and get out. Not a bad formula, especially in basic rock 'n roll. Not everybody can be Pink Floyd.

I believe my f-i-l has a working r2r player. I'll see if I can abscond with it (if the perps from a couple of weeks ago didn't steal it). I'll let you know.

If BiT's doesn't work, my fixer here in Mass will either fix it for you if its fixable to specs (my Sony Walkman D6 casette player no longer is, despite my plea that "close is good enough") or could have one that he could sell you. Tell me if you want info.

Just for the record, I've borrowed my sister's D6, & have a couple working larger casette tape recorder/players, one portable but much larger.

I'd bet there are places (either local or mail-away) that would convert your tape to digital. I wouldn't be surprised if it were cheaper than you think.

My f-i-l has two Teac reel to reel players in good condition.

After the holidays contact me and we can discuss me converting the tape to digital.

Sounds terrific...the hard part will be hunting down the tapes...my brother and his wife would make for a good episode of "Hoarders"..it's a wonder they can find each other amidst all the clutter

I'll see your brother's house and raise you my f-i-l's house. He has trouble getting his walker through the house because of all the crap. You can't even walk through the dining room. But the r2r players are pretty big and easy to see.
