Mamma Mia

I read a year or two ago they were doing a movie of this with Meryl Streep. I chose Christine Baranski and Rosie O'Donnell for the two friends, and lo and behold they have cast Baranski indeed! The other friend is well-regarded British actor Julie Walters.
July 18 can't get here quickly enough.

If anybody thinks I'm going to comment on this, you're nuts!

LOL, Frank! It really is a fun show to watch and you can't help but sorta get into it, music and all. The audience is usually standing and singing along with the last number.
Dunno if I'll see the movie or not, but you might actually like it.

It goes back a long way, Skoop. Frank is not a big fan of ABBA.

Ha! When I read the thread title, I immediately thought, "Now why is Skoop, of all people, trying to get Frank's goat?" When I read her post, I realized it was unintentional.
I think most of the ABBA discussions were contained to the GC, Skoop. It's kind of a friendly pointy stick (if there is such a thing) for Frank.
And since I feel the way about Meryl Streep that Frank does about ABBA, I'll be sitting this movie out. Although I love Christine Baranski and Mrs. Weasley, and La Meryl hasn't been nearly so obnoxious since she quit taking herself EVER so seriously, so maybe I will see it.

On the one hand, I think it is funny when one's goat is gotten by someone who doesn't even know where one's goat lives.
On the other hand, it is disconcerting to the goat getter.
On yet another hand, the observers who know nothing about nothing are left just wondering.
ABBA rules!
Meryl Streep rocks.
Did I get two goats?

In fact, although I'm not a huge fan of ABBA, my dislike for them has been greatly exagerrated over the years. Here's the whole story.
One night in the chat room, I entered and someone immediately told me, "I saw
Mamma Mia last night."
I flippantly said, "I'd rather have root canal than listen to ABBA." Unfortunately, this was taken as a putdown. It turned into this huge brouhaha -- it was a week after 9/11, and I think everybody was a bit edgy.
Happily, we straightened it all out amicably, and the Frank/ABBA thing became a running joke.
A month or so later, when we had our Jipterfest in Las Vegas, there was a big party in one of the hotel rooms. Moon brought his keyboard, we did a lot of singing (until security showed up.) But the highlight was when three lovely ladies serenaded me with their rendition of
Dancing Queen. (This was preplanned -- I think Fanny masterminded it, but I may be mistaken about that.)
Anyway, that's the story.

We need the Charles Fox Singers to come serenade Frank!
Since ABBA is Frank's Waterloo, I request that.
Mamma Mia, That's a Swedish Meatball!

My my, at Waterloo Napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
My my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger
Oh yeah, and now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

That's one of my CFS signatures, adding a clever header.
Of course, it doesn't work as well over here as it did on the old unthreaded Boreds.....

The said chat person who saw Mama Mia for the first time 3 days after 9/11 was me. I had been out to a Knights of Columbus dinner with hubby where only one woman talked to me all night - even when I was sitting directly beside them.
Needless to say, I was in one lousy mood so when Frank trashed my love of everything ABBA - I got rather p/o'd and left chat. Cindy Wellman talked me into coming back.
When we were planning Jipterwest in Vegas - I think it was Judy's idea to sing Dancing Queen to bug Frank - incidentally, Dancing Queen is the one ABBA song I hate.
We had the Friday night party in our room and several of us serenaded Frank. All has been forgiven long ago.
I knew Frank would have to chime in though when I saw Ritterskoop's post!

Dear Lord, I had to look thrice when I saw the header LOL
I think you are right about the ringleader being Sliver. Of course, with 45 people in our room, it was hard to keep track

I am sorely disappointed if only three people were singing. The lyrics were e-mailed well in advance to all who said they were going -- except Frank and K.T. (The Tomato shares Frank's affection for All Things ABBA.)

Hope the Broadway show was better than the movie--I did not like the movie.
Pierce Brosnan should not sing.
Meryl Streep sang better than I thought she would be. I still do not think of her as a "looker".
I liked Sophie's (Amanda Seyfried) boob job.
If the opportunity arose, I would see the Broadway version just so I could have some comparison.
Last Friday night I was not the only guy that had a gun to his head to see this movie.

Streep has sung before, quite well in Postcards from the Edge and Prairie Home Companion, and does a very good musical theater cameo bit at the end of Stuck on You, singing a duet with Greg Kinnear.
I enjoyed the film for what it was, light goofy fun. We saw it on Tuesday night the first week it opened and the theater was almost full, very surprising for a midweek show. Not surprisingly, there were only about ten men in the entire theater.

Daughter1111 went with 2 friends and due to some tie in with the company, I was able to get free tickets for them.
She said it was really strange to see James Bond singing.
LOL

The NY Times review of the movie said something like, "Meryl Streep gives the worst performance of here career...deliberately."
The upshot of the review is that it's a harmless bad movie, and if you go into it with that attitude, you'll enjoy it more. Apparently, most of the cast went into it with that attitude.

No one has sent it to me.
I think I will be seeing it in October with t-girl.
