Just a check on anyone who might have been in harm's way.

The parents-in-law (you may recall they moved from Pennsylvania about a year ago because the winters were too cold down to the Myrtle Beach SC area; but now complain about it being too hot, and are targeting yet another move to the Tennessee mountains) made through ok -- they were far enough from the coast that the evacuation wasn't mandatory, but right now they are without power. Some branches knocked down, but nothing on the house.

The local power company, Santee Cooper, show almost 50% of the customer down, and they have given a general "hope to have power up by Friday" notice. Fortunately, they aren't the kinds to stockpile frozen and refrigerated foods, other than what they need in the short term, so it shouldn't be more than an inconvenience for them. But I know the beach there got hammered, including having one of the main piers mangled.

Last month, our publishing center took on the Myrtle Beach and Hilton head papers. One of our teammates from HH had to evacuate, so he just came on up to Charlotte (as did many) and has been working in our office all week.

We've had hours-early deadlines for MB and Raleigh, but not HH, which is the only paper we know of that gets hit by a hurricane and somehow gets later press times.

Not storm-related: Later this month we pick up the State College, Pa., paper, then in November: Columbus, Ga., and Macon, Ga. We just lost three online staffers to layoffs, so this feels like the tiniest bit of job security for some of our desk, for a little while, anyway.

I think they'll find the winters in the Tennessee mountains are longer and harsher than in Pennsylvania.

I concur. However, it would not surprise me if the move would be for other reasons, likely involving his idea of what religion is supposed to be like (which is one reason he left the part of PA he was in).

I concur. However, it would not surprise me if the move would be for other reasons, likely involving his idea of what religion is supposed to be like (which is one reason he left the part of PA he was in).

Not quite, but closer to that than Presbyterian* Seriously, he's an Assembly of God Pentecostal-type. I think the church he was involved with in south-central PA had drifted in a different way than he felt appropriate (plus his grandkids that lived nearby had gone off to university and moved away), so they decided to go to SC. I know he's involved with a nearby Southern Baptist church, but from what I hear, he's less than thrilled with them also. I believe where he's talked about going to also has more Pentecostal types than he has found in the Low Country.

I'm in Wayne Co., North Carolina and right in the middle of some of the worst of the flooding. If you see anything about Wayne Co. or Goldsboro, that's where we are. We came out lucky - power was out for a couple hours today and water was low pressure, but other than that, we are unaffected. However the county is seeing flooding even worse than after Hurricane Floyd in 1999 which was supposed to have been a 1000 year flood. Lots of people without power (including my daughter in Fayetteville) and as the water in the Neuse and Little Rivers rise we are going to be cut off pretty soon. There have been more than 1000 water rescues and 10 deaths in NC.

I would post pictures but I don't know how to get them from my hard drive into a post.

They have postponed the Navy-ECU game from Thursday night because of the flooding.

Both teams had Nov. 19 available, which is cool.
