Game #162: Songwich

Identify the 100 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make several excursions elsewhere, including a few notable album cuts.) Then, match them into 45 foursomes according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself.

51 songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity. 13 songs will be used three times, each time in a different capacity. One song will be used four times, each time in a different capacity. Yes, there are four ways a song can be used, though two of them are variations of the same usage. You’ll see, I hope.

At least two of the songs in every foursome are used more than once in the game. In twelve of the foursomes, all four songs are used more than once in the game.

A song cannot be used twice in the same foursome.

Where a song title is relevant, words in parentheses should be treated as part of the title.

Where an artist is relevant, I am usually looking for the original artist. There are a few exceptions where someone else arguably had the definitive and/or most successful version of a song.

I hope this proves an easier nut to crack than the last game. And I do hope those pesky alternate solutions don’t screw things up. Play on!

1. I say high, you say low.
You say why and I say I don't know.
Oh, no!

2. Fame and fortune is a magnet,
It can pull you far away from home.
With a dream in your heart you're never alone.

3. I ain't scared of your brother,
I ain't scared of no sheets,
I ain't scared of nobody,
Girl, when the goin' gets mean.

4. Something so deceiving
When you stop believing,
Turn me around again.
Said we couldn't do it,
You know I want to do it again.

5. With you I could bring out
All the love that I have.
With you there's a heaven
So Earth ain't so bad.

6. My baby makes me proud,
Lord, don't she make me proud.
She never makes a scene
By hanging all over me in a crowd.

7. I work for the county out on ninety five,
All day I hold a red flag and watch the traffic pass me by.
In my head I keep a picture of a pretty little miss.
Someday, mister, I'm gonna lead a better life than this.

8. I'm so afraid to love you,
But more afraid to lose,
Clinging to a past that doesn't let me choose.

9. Where have you been hidin' out lately, honey?
You can't dress trashy till you spend a lot of money.

10. I was a car hop,
You were into be-bop,
You sang doo-wop diddy-wop diddy-wop-doo.
All of them changes you put me through.

11. Lollipop
Must mistake me, you're a sucker
To think that I would be a victim, not another.
Say it, play it how you wanna
But no way I'm ever gonna fall for you.

12. When I am kissed
I want his lips to really kiss me,
When we're apart
I want his heart to really miss me.

13. I heard it all before
So don't knock down my door.
I'm a loser and a user, so I don't need no accuser
To try and slag me down, because I know you're right.

14. Every time I look into your lovely eyes
I see a love that money just can't buy.
One look from you, I drift away,
I pray that you are here to stay
.
15. Don't say words you're gonna regret.
Don't let the fire rush to your head.

16. And yes, I know
How lonely life can be,
The shadows follow me
And the night won't set me free.

17. People around every corner,
They seem to smile and say,
“We don't care what your name is, boy,
We'll never turn you away.”

18. I wake up, with blood-shot eyes,
Struggled to memorize
The way it felt between your thighs.

19. People say that I've found a way
To make you say that you love me.
Hey baby, you didn't go for that.
It's a natural fact
That I wanna come back,
Show me where it's at, baby.

20. Nothing means more to me than hearing you say,
"I'm going to marry you,
Will you marry me, Uncle Ray?"

21. A scooter for Jimmy
A dolly for Sue,
The kind that will even say, "How do you do?"

22. There is a young cowboy, he lives on the range.
His horse and his cattle are his only companions.
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons,
Waiting for summer, his pastures to change.

23. Lemme tell ya, them guys ain't dumb.
Maybe get a blister on your little finger,
Maybe get a blister on your thumb.

24. Nearer, nearer, by changing horses
Still so far away,
People fighting for their places
Just get in the way.

25. She musters a smile for his nostalgic tale,
Never coming near what he wanted to say,
Only to realize
It never really was.

26. If you're ready, I'm willing and able,
Help me lay my cards out on the table.
You're mine and I'm yours for the taking.
Right now the rules we made are meant for breaking.

27. But now the days grow short, I'm in the autumn of the year,
And now I think of my life as vintage wine from fine old kegs
From the brim to the dregs
And it poured sweet and clear.

28. They'll eat their words with a fork and spoon
And watch 'em, they'll hit the road and all be surfin' soon.

29. Every whisper
Of every waking hour
I'm choosing my confessions,
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt, lost, and blinded fool.

30. It still feels like our first night together,
Feels like the first kiss.
It's getting better, baby,
No one can better this.

31. This is my song for real, no doubt,
See the DJ is making me feel thugged out.

32. I need it when I want it,
I want it when I don't,
Tell myself I'll stop every day,
Knowing that I won't.

33. From this old world I try to hide my face,
From this loneliness there's no hiding place.
Inside this cold and empty house I dwell
In darkness with memories I know so well.

34. LA, Hollywood, and the Sunset Strip
Is something everyone should see,
Neon lights and the pretty, pretty girls
All dressed so scantily.

35. The hurting’s on me, yeah,
And I will never be free, no, my baby, no no.
You gave a promise to me, yeah,
And you broke it, you broke it.

36. Magic, it must be magic,
The way I hold you and the night just seems to fly.
Easy for you to take me to a star,
Heaven is that moment when I look into your eyes.

37. I'd say her values are corrupted
But she's open to change,
Then one day she's satisfied
And the next I'll find her crying
And it's nothing she can explain.

38. If you wake up and don't want to smile,
If it takes just a little while,
Open your eyes and look at the day,
You'll see things in a different way.

39. You're honey, child, to a swarm of bees,
Gonna blow right through you like a breeze.
Give me one last dance,
We'll slide down the surface of things.

40. Unlucky in love, least that's what they say.
He lost his head and he gambled his heart away.
He still keeps searching, though there's nothing left,
Staked his heart and lost, now he has to pay the cost.

41. I tiptoe past the master bedroom where
My mother reads her magazines,
I hear her call sweet dreams
But I forgot how to dream.

42. Well, I bet you I'm-a gonna be a big star,
Might win an Oscar, you can never tell.
The movie's gonna make me a big star,
'Cause I can play the part so well.

43. I would like to get to know if I could be
The kind of girl that you could be down for,
’Cause when I look at you
I feel something tell me
That you're the kind of guy that I should make a move on.

44. You came to catch,
You thought I'd be naive and tame.
You met your match,
I beat you at your own game.

45. It's Friday night, and I feel all right,
The party is here on the West side,
So I reach for my 40 and I turn it up,
Designated driver take the keys to my truck.

46. I want you to love me, like I'm a hot pie
Keep thinkin' of me, doin' what you like.
So boy, forget about the world cause it's gon' be me and you tonight,
I wanna make you beg for it, then I'm-a make you swallow your pride.

47. Here we are,
What is left of a husband and a wife with four good kids
Who have a way of gettin' on with their lives,
And I'm not old but I'm getting a whole lot older every day.
It's too late to keep from goin' crazy,
I've got to get away.

48. I can't help it,
Everything's a mess.
I can't help it,
You're so treacherous
When it comes to tenderness.

49. Oh, under those white street lamps
There is a little chance they may see.

50. If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends,
Make it last forever, friendship never ends.

51. There you are
Holding her hand.
I am lost,
Dying to understand
Didn't I
Cherish you right?
Don't you know
You were my life?

52. Something 'bout the way your hair falls in your face,
I love the shape you take when crawling towards the pillowcase.
You tell me where to go and
Though I might leave to find it,
I'll never let your head hit the bed
Without my hand behind it.

53. Drive-in movies,
Comic books and blue jeans,
Howdy Doody,
Baseball cards and birthdays.

54. I won't talk,
I won't breathe,
I won't move till you finally see
That you belong with me.

55. But she wears short skirts,
I wear t-shirts.
She's cheer captain
And I'm on the bleachers,
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time.

56. Used to be my life was just emotions passing by,
Then you came along and made me laugh and made me cry,
You taught me why.

57. She dealt two cards, a queen and a three,
And mumbled some words that were so strange to me,
Then she turned up a two-eyed jack,
My eyes saw red, but the card still stayed black.

58. My man put me up for the share, one-fourth of a square,
Headed for Delaware with one change of gear.

59. Nutty-nutty-nutty my love for you,
I can't believe my dreams come true,
I've finally found somebody whose heart is true,
And best of all you love me, too.

60. I remember when-a we used to sit
In a government yard in Trenchtown,
Oba - obaserving the 'ypocrites - yeah! -
Mingle with the good people we meet, yeah!

61. You're thinking up your white lies,
You're putting on your bedroom eyes,
You say you're coming home, but you won't say when,
But I can feel it coming,
If you leave tonight, keep running,
And you need never look back again.

62. It's the singer, not the song,
That makes the music move along.

63. You can understand everything to share,
Let your spirits dance, brothers, everywhere,
Let your head be free,
Turn the wisdom key,
Find it naturally,
See you're lucky to be.

64. It's noble and it's brutal,
It distorts and deranges
And it wrenches you up
And you're left like a zombie.

65. Boy, you've been running around too long,
Now I think you're running out of time.
No more jumping in and out of my bed.
It's time for me to draw the line.

66. Each day I live I want to be
A day to give the best of me.
I'm only one, but not alone.
My finest day is yet unknown.

67. I told my mother, my brother, my sister and my friend,
I told the others, my lovers, both past and present tense.
Every time I see you, everything starts making sense.

68. There's one day I dream of,
The day I can bring
My token of true love,
Your engagement ring.
I love you.

69. Got a picture of you I carry in my heart,
Close my eyes to see it when the world gets dark,
Got a memory of you I carry in my soul,
I wrap it close around me when the nights get cold.

70. I turn my back and you're messin' around.
I'm not really jealous, don't like lookin' like a clown.
I think of you ev'ry night and day,
You took my heart, then you took my pride away.

71. Out in the distance
Always within reach,
There’s a crossroad
Where all the victims meet.

72. There was no risk that I wouldn't take
And not a promise that I didn't make.
All I asked was that you just hold on,
And now I'm wondering what I did wrong.

73. Took a walk down the street
Through the heat-whispered trees,
I thought I could hear (hear, hear, hear)
Somebody call out my name as it started to rain.

74. It’s morning, and we slept the night away.
It happened, now we can’t turn back the hands of time (oh no).
Yes, we’ve stolen this moment, we forgot to face, one simple fact:
We both belong to someone else as we slept the night away.

75. Baby, baby, I'll meet you
Same place, same time,
Where we can get together
And ease up our mind.

76. I've got thirty-six expressions,
Sweet as pie to tough as leather,
And that's six expressions more
Than all them Barrymores put together.

77. One, two,
I'll party you,
Three, four,
So get your butt on the floor,
Five, six,
Know you dig the mix,
Seven, eight,
Let it shake.

78. You're young and you're in a hurry,
You're eager for love but don't you worry,
We both want the sweetness in life
But these things don't come overnight.

79. Lord, I gave all my money and my time.
I know it's a shame
But I'm giving you back your name.

80. I need you in my arms, need you to hold,
You're my world, my heart, my soul,
If you ever leave
Baby, you would take away everything good in my life.

81. I stumble into town just like a sacred cow,
Visions of swastikas in my head,
Plans for everyone.

82. Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane,
Jane plays with Willi, Willi is happy again.
Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Britt,
Adolf builds a bonfire, Enrico plays with it.

83. I would walk home every evening
Through the pyramids of light,
I would feed myself on silence,
Wash it down with empty nights.

84. Sometimes I feel like I'm drunk behind the wheel,
The wheel of possibility.
However it may roll, give it a spin,
See if you can somehow factor in,
You know there's always more than one way
To say exactly what you mean to say.

85. You say my love has always been on your mind,
But how can I ever love you when you keep working overtime?
Too many empty nights could make almost any guy roam
To look for the love he don't get whenever he's alone at home.

86. Take one fresh and tender kiss,
Add one stolen night of bliss,
One girl, one boy,
Some grief, some joy.

87. Yo, this one here goes out to all my players out there,
Ya know, got to have one good girl whose always been there,
Like, ya know, took all the bulls*it
Then one day she can't take it no more and decides to leave.

88. This morning I woke up with this feeling
I didn't know how to deal with,
And so I just decided to myself
I'd hide it to myself
And never talk about it,
And did not go and shout it when you walked into the room?

89. Troubled times
Caught between confusions and pain, pain, pain.
Distant eyes,
Promises we made were in vain, in vain, in vain.

90. Well, I'm about to get sick
From watchin' my TV,
Been checkin' out the news
Until my eyeballs fail to see.
I mean to say that every day
Is just another rotten mess,
And when it's gonna change, my friend,
Is anybody's guess.

91. We started dancing and love put us into a groove
As soon as we started to move.
The music played while our bodies displayed through the dance,
Then love picked us out for romance.

92. He'd end up blowing all his wages for the week,
All for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek.

93. I'll give the sun,
The rain,
The moon,
The stars and the mountains.
I'll give you the world
And all that you wish for
And even more.

94. Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain,
Ev'rybody knows
Baby's got new clothes,
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls.

95. So lift your eyes if you feel you can,
Reach for a star and I'll show you a plan.
I figured it out,
What I needed was someone to show me.

96. I took Katie down by the river with a six dollar bottle of wine,
Just a fool tryin' to play it cool, hopin' she'd let me cross the line.

97. The music’s soft, lights are low,
The mood is one all lovers know.
Oh, my darling at last we are one.
The trip to heaven’s begun.

98. You say you're gonna go and call it quits,
Gonna chuck it all and break our love to bits.

99. You don't have to say what you did,
I already know, I found out from him.
Now there's just no chance for you and me, there'll never be,
And don't it make you sad about it.

100. Well-a bless my soul, what's wrong with me?
I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree.

Play on!

First consolidation:

Game #162: Songwich

Identify the 100 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make several excursions elsewhere, including a few notable album cuts.) Then, match them into 45 foursomes according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself.

Every definite answer is right, but you already knew that. That leaves one wrong answer and one incomplete answer (but you already knew that, too.)

Play on!

85. You say my love has always been on your mind,
But how can I ever love you when you keep working overtime?
Too many empty nights could make almost any guy roam
To look for the love he don't get whenever he's alone at home.

I'm guessing you mean "Stop To Love." As much as I love that song, I can't quote a single lyric outside of the chorus...

95 Lost in Love is by Air Supply

If Act Naturally is the Buck Owens version, we might want to add "& His Buckaroos" to the group name.

One Moment in Time is usually credited to Whitney Houston, because of the Olympics.

Don't know what the incorrect one is right now.

jarnon wrote:"Songwich" suggests a set of 3 songs (top, middle, bottom). But this game has sets of 4 songs.
All of my sandwiches typically contain two things in the middle--peanut butter and jelly, meat and cheese, meat and veg, meat and meat, etc.

I was thinking of a word chain, where the last word of a title becomes the first word of a new title. But I think a game like that would open up the possibility of a crapload of unintentional matches. Since we're dealing with quartets here, rather than pairs or triplets, I suspect that Frank wants something very precise in order to narrow the field.

A couple of these songs already look out-of-place to me. Like why do we have an obscure Babs song, rather than one of her well-known hits? And why are the Misfit Toys here?

Finally, this one can stop torturing me...

BUT, it's the first song that she sings as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl -- obscurity is in the eyes of the theater-goer, Fireball! :D

Yes - one of my favorite Vandross songs and doubtless the one that is incomplete.

WHICH leads me to believe that "stop to Love" could be a key.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon Over Parador
Seven Groundhog Days in May
George of the Asphalt Jungle

Mashups. Sandwiches. SONGWICHES.

I am, of course, listening in on a WebEx meeting and cannot od ANYTHING with this but .....

CATCH a FALLING STAR by Perry Como

Songs get mashed into another song by one of the artists. It could be the reason why so many songs are used repeatedly.

It may not work but I am throwing it out there to see if it might

Wednesday consolidation:

Play on!
