Today's album is a quirky little offering from a classic band. It has usually been bashed by critics but I seemed to have been in the minority who "got" it. What that says about me, I'm not too sure...

67. SOAP OPERA-THE KINKS (1975)

This album does not get a lot of love among the many items in the Kinks' canon, even assuming that the assessor is even
aware of it. It comes from a period in which practically every album the band was putting out was a "concept album".
In fact, many of the group's biggest fans hate it. I think, however, that the record is hilarious, and there's some
pretty good music in the goofy storyline as well. Very theatrical but some English Pub music as well as a couple of
rockers. They all serve to tell the story of a rockstar who shows up on the doorstep of an ordinary couple, with an
offer to change places with Norman (the husband) to get material for his songs, and to prove at the same time that he can turn even
the most boring, average person into a star. Ahh, but there's a twist in the end! My favorite song is "Ducks On The Wall",
a rockin' tune that finds our star turned normal dude railing against his "wife's" ghastly ceramic ducks that hang on
the walls. Who says you can't rock and laugh at the same time?
