68. BAND ON THE RUN-PAUL MCCARTNEY AND WINGS (1973)
Losing two band members just before recording was to start, Paul and Linda McCartney and Denny Laine took
off to Lagos, Nigeria to work on their new album. They encountered numerous difficulties, including being robbed at
knifepoint, and after some additional work back in London, emerged with what is generally considered Paul's best
post-Beatles achievement. There is a plethora of fine material here, and the sound quality is warmer and richer by far
than his previous 4 albums, which have always sounded deliberately lo-fi in order to distance himself from his Beatle
days. We lucky U.S. record buyers got "Helen Wheels", one of my favorite Macca tracks, added to the track list on our
version. The title track and "Jet" are here, along with personal faves "Let Me Roll It" and the quirky "Mrs. Vanderbilt".
