87. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA-QUEEN (1975)

OK, upfront: "Bohemian Rhapsody" is NOT one of the 350 songs on my all-time favorite song list. Not that I don't like it.
Not that I don't think it's an epic achievement, I do. But I've heard it 357,333 times and if I'm taking only 350 songs to
a desert island, I'm not using a slot for a song I am pretty much tired of hearing. BUT...if we're talking only 150 ALBUMS,
we've got a bit of a different situation here, because I do like the thought of being able to hear "Death On Two Legs",
"'39", and "I'm In Love With My Car"..heck, even "You're My Best Friend"..so I guess I could put up with "Rhapsody" in that
scenario. Besides, if my son was with me on that island, we'd still be able to do the "Wayne's World" head banging routine.

I think "39" is the best song on here. As much as I love Freddie Mercury, the band needed to dial it back once in a while with a Brian May song or two like "39" (or "Sleepin' on the Sidewalk" from News of the World).

In total agreement. I'll even go one step further. Mercury was awesome, but my favorite songs on this one are "39" and "I'm In Love With My Car", which Freddie didn't sing either (Roger Taylor did).

I'll confess I haven't been religiously following the list so perhaps it's already appeared. But I'm personally rooting for "White Rabbit" to show up. --Bob

I read a detailed breakdown of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that said Taylor hit the very highest high note on the chorus, not Mercury.

It's an amazing work of music either way, but I found that interesting.

Yeah if you listen to any of the songs Taylor sang lead on, his upper range was higher than Freddie's. On this same album, Taylor's "I'm In Love With My Car" demonstrates this pretty well. Freddie did have a strong, clear falsetto, and his range was certainly nothing to sneeze at. Above all that, there's no question as to who had the better voice.
