I am really sorry that your side decided to nominate such a horse's ass so that I have no meaningful alternatives in November than to vote for someone I really dislike intensely.

Oh I don't care about that. Nothing is different from when when Bush was criticized for the exact same thing. When criticizing the sitting President you don't need to apply logic, according to Obama, who criticized Bush during the Katrina recovery, and the press. Or have the rules changed since 2005?

I know they haven't. The difference is how the press covers it.

I'm sure Obama will visit Louisiana, just like he, and Bush, visited previous disasters. The preparation and response to Katrina was a clusterfuck, and everyone from the White House to state and local government was deservedly chastised. The response to Sandy wasn't as bad, so there was less criticism. Hopefully we've learned something from past catastrophes, and the response this time will be better. If not, there will be plenty of complaints.

Since the press is under-reporting this story, should I assume Black Lives Matter is there in the front lines coordinating the relief efforts for all the black lives affected by this?

Uh, that's not what they do. They certainly wouldn't discriminate in their assistance if that's what they did do.

On the one hand, that's a safe prediction. It's similar to me predicting that I'll win 10 gold medals in my second Olympics.

But in the actual election this year, Trump is on a pace to get less of the black vote than Jill Stein will.

From the start, I've felt that the Republican messaging about this election has been very wrong. It's been one variation after another of "Be afraid. Be very afraid." The problem with that is that almost everything that Trump and the Republicans are saying is bad about America is either (1) happening to other people (the overwhelming majority of people in this country haven't been affected by any act of terrorism since 9/11), or (2) couched in economic mumbo jumbo double talk about statistics like the percentage of "real GDP growth." A general rule of thumb is that the candidate who resorts to arcane statistics like this to prove his or her case is the loser. People were scared about the economy in 2008; they aren't that scared now. And giving a couple of speeches about what's wrong in black America in front of all-white audiences in all-white neighborhoods is designed more to pacify Republicans thinking about abandoning Trump than to actually win over any black voters. Even though Trump qualified his 95% comment (one of the few ad libbed comments in his teleprompter speech) by saying it would happen when he ran for re-election, the headlines aren't picking up this qualification and they're just reporting "Trump Predicts He Will Get 95% of Black Vote," which makes him appear even more out of touch than he actually is (hard as that may be to believe).

Republicans may revere their image of Ronald Reagan, but they sure haven't learned any lessons from him about campaigning.

Yeah, the media are usually intelligent.

I had an interesting talk with my brother last week. He and his family went on a two-week vacation to the south of France, arriving in Marseilles the day after the attack in Nice (an hour away). I made the comment to him that it must have seemed like a war zone there, and his reply was to the contrary. The local news reported on the event, but people didn't dwell on it, there was no widespread panic or concern, and the only time he saw any heightened security was at a music festival in some smaller town they went through that had concerts with about 5,000 people in attendance and a couple of armed soldiers outside as additional security.

Apparently the people of France are able to put events like this in their proper perspective and not work themselves into a blind panic when things like this occur (which is exactly what the terrorists want).
