The Boney 500: Album #109

109. LOOK SHARP!-JOE JACKSON (1979)

Jackson has been a musical chameleon...he's explored classical, big band/swing, rhythm and blues, salsa,
and most often, jazz styles in his long career. But he started out as a New Wave, Punk-popster. This was
his debut album, and it's packed with great songs, like the rhythmic "Sunday Papers", the frenetic "One
More Time" and "Got The Time", and the funny, poppy hit "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"

It's amazing how much different some of later works like Blaze of Glory and Laughter & Lust sound compared to this one. Look Sharp! has always been a Vandal fave. though, with it's raw, punkish sound. It makes me want to do the Instant Mash.

I liked the followup, I'm The Man, as well, although not quite as much as this one. The title song of that second album was a long time favorite on our band's setlist...it was such a blast to sing it. We also did It's Different For Girls from that album, and from Look Sharp! we did Is She Really Going Out With Him, Sunday Papers, and Got The Time.

I've liked a fair amount of his music since then (especially Body and Soul and the Big Band/Swing styled Jumpin' Jive), but those first two records are pretty cool.
