Marni Nixon has died. She was 86. Ms Nixon sang for Deborah Kerr, Natalie Wood, and Audrey Hepburn among others.

RIP

I sent this to my co-workers earlier:

On the desk where we work, we love making other people look good.

A wonderful talent died today who made a career out of doing the same: Marni Nixon, 86, who sang the lead vocals, uncredited, in the movie versions of "West Side Story," The King and I" and "My Fair Lady" - of those three, only Deborah Kerr was gracious about it, and actively worked with Nixon. Natalie Wood was a punk, and Audrey Hepburn pouted.

I don't know that there is a lesson, except maybe that we can make things sound good even if they don't know our names.

Feeling cheesy.

She was the correct answer to Kim Hunt's $500,000 question back in the day.

Hey, can you believe it?! I made a post relevant to WWTBAM!

She also had her turn on the game show circuit:

Her one on-screen appearance was in The Sound of Music as one of the quartet of nuns singing to Mother Superior about "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?"

Hepburn's casting in My Fair Lady was rather controversial because Julie Andrews was passed over despite having originated the role on Broadway (as did Rex Harrison) and had another huge hit in Camelot. But Jack Warner didn't think she had sufficient name recognition (and also she had never appeared in a movie) so Hepburn got the role despite her lack of a singing voice. My Fair Lady cleaned up at the Oscars that year, winning Best Picture, Director, and Actor, but Hepburn didn't even get nominated for Best Actress. The actress who won that year ... Julie Andrews for her "consolation" role in Mary Poppins.

Ms. Nixon played Sister Sophia in the Sound of Music. No need to dub the five-octave range of Miss Andrews, but I'm glad Marni got a credited singing role in one of the most celebrated movie musicals of all time.
