Current leader is a jerk (highly poli-technical term), but military cannot be good. Supposed to be a democratic country. In its way.

According to NPR, most recent news is that current govt claims it has regained control/prevented coup & promises bad things to people attempting the coup. They had/have at least one govt official as hostage.

No, wait; latest news is that military has taken over TV & announcing themselves leaders.

No-one knows yet.

Appears to be not-well-organized coup, according to analysts.

Erdoğan has maintained good relations with America and recently mended fences with Israel and Russia. On the other hand, he's eroded democracy in Turkey. It'll be interesting to see how Washington reacts.

I imagine Trump will tweet congratulations to the new military regime and urge them to be tough on terror.

Apparently the coup failed and Erdogan is still in power. The coup plotters wanted to reverse his Islamist efforts in Turkey - wanting the country to keep closer to the Qur'an. Erdogan is claiming that the coup was initiated by a former ally who is now living in exile in Pennsylvania.
