Oscar winning director of The Deer Hunter, one of the best movies ever made about the Vietnam War, whose career took a nosedive a couple of years later with the infamous flop, Heaven's Gate, from which he never really recovered. He won the Best Director Oscar and got a screenwriting nomination for Deer Hunter (which also won Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Walken), but after Heaven's Gate in 1980, he only directed four more films the rest of his life, none of them notably successful.

Age 77.
