284. HAPPY-THE ROLLING STONES (1972)
ALBUM: Exile On Main Street

Keith Richards does not possess the greatest singing voice, to say the least. Yet, when he does
take the lead vocal, it usually yields positive results...the voice just seems to match the
material perfectly. Case in point: this good natured rocker.

283. PURE AND EASY-THE WHO (1974)
ALBUM: Odds & Sods

Unreleased until the "Odds & Sods" collection of tunes recorded but not previously appearing on
any album, this was part of the abandoned "Lifehouse" project that wound up morphing into the
classic "Who's Next" album. It would've made that pretty much perfect album even better had it
made the album's final running order, but then again, what would I drop to make room for this? At
any rate, this is a great tune and one that wound up on the cutting room floor despite being one
great Who song, in my opinion. It did turn up on Pete Townshend's first solo album, a different
version with his lead vocal rather than Roger Daltrey's. I liked that version, too.

282. THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING-KING CRIMSON (1969)
ALBUM: In The Court Of The Crimson King

Majestic and a bit spooky (due in large part to the use of an epic mellotron in its instrumentation),
this progressive rock staple was pretty groundbreaking in its time. The lyrics might sound a little dated
to modern-day listeners in their over the top, way too serious imagery, but prog-rock was full of those
types of lyrics, especially early on. This first incarnation of the band included Greg Lake (later of
Emerson, Lake & Palmer) on lead vocals and bass, and Ian McDonald on various instruments, who would
later become part of Foreigner, which was a pretty big change in musical style. Crimson still exists today,
the only constant since their inception being the leader, eccentric guitar master Robert Fripp. Unfortunately
I could only find an edited version of it on Youtube, which cuts it off abruptly before the last few minutes..
terrible edit which I assume has something to do with the rights to the song.
