Let's all gather around the piano for today's album selection...

133. THE WAY IT IS-BRUCE HORNSBY AND THE RANGE (1986)

Hornsby's first, and still most successful, album to date. He hasn't had anywhere near the mainstream
attention since then, which is too bad because he's put out some great music over the past 30 years.
Which is not to downplay the quality of this record by any means. It added a touch of class to the Top 40
airwaves with tasty piano driven tunes like "Mandolin Rain", "Every Little Kiss" and of course, his
signature song, the title track. I'm also quite fond of the bouncy opener "On The Western Skyline" and
the swaying "Down The Road Tonight". His records always feature high quality musicianship and this
debut album established that right from the start.

I mentioned this on Facebook but neglected to do so here....Nancy got me to listen in more depth to Hornsby, and now I am a bigger fan than she is. Saw him in concert a few years back, and the musicianship of all the players is off the charts.

"Mandolin Rain" was on the soundtrack to my 6th grade inside recesses during the winter of 1987 (Yes, we had a stereo in class, and it was awesome!)... but it's only the second greatest song sung by a Bruce that reminds me of that time....

(Hide your eyes, everyone!)
