Game #160: A Peculiar Little Lyrics Game

Identify the 96 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make several excursions elsewhere.) Then, match them into 50 pairs according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Four songs will be used twice, each in two different capacities.

The Tangredi may reveal itself fairly early on -- if you see it IMMEDIATELY, say so but don't blow the gaffe too soon - but the matches should still be fun. They don’t follow a rigid formula, and some will be more obvious than others. I’ll be interested to see how far you can get without resorting to research.

1. Showin' how funky and strong is your fight,
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right.

2. And our lives are forever changed,
We will never be the same,
The more you change, the less you feel.
Believe, believe in me, believe
That life can change, that you're not stuck in vain.

3. The guys come to race her from all around,
But she'll give ’em a length, then she'll shut ’em down.

4. When you try your best but you don't succeed,
When you get what you want but not what you need,
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep,
Stuck in reverse.

5. One that won't make my mouth too dry
Or make my eyes too red.

6. He takes me deep-sea fishing in a submarine,
We go to drive-in movies in a limousine,
He's got a whirly-birdy and a 12-foot yacht,
Ah, but that’s not all he's got!

7. I was like, good gracious a*s bodacious
Flirtatious, tryin’ to show faces
Lookin’ for the right time to shoot my steam (you know)
Lookin’ for the right time to flash them keys.

8. Keeping my eyes open
I cannot afford to sleep,
Giving away promises
I know that I can't keep,
Nothing fills the blackness
That has seeped into my chest.
I need you in my blood,
I am forsaking all the rest.

9. Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Whether you're broke or evergreen.
You're black, white, beige, chola descent,
You're Lebanese, you're orient.

10. When I became of age, my mother called me to her side.
She said, "Son, you're growing up now, pretty soon you'll take a bride.”

11. Mama told me when I was young,
“Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.”

12. You see the signs, but you can't read,
You're runnin' at a different speed,
Your heart beats in double time,
Another kiss and you'll be mine.

13. I'll try every trick in the book
With every step that you take,
Everywhere that you look
Just look and you'll find
I'll be waiting in line, I'll be waiting in line.

14. A lonely mother gazing out of her window,
Staring at a son that she just can't touch.
If at any time he's in a jam, she'll be by his side,
But he doesn't realize he hurts her so much.

15. I shoulda learned to play the guitar,
I shoulda learned to play them drums.
Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera.
Man, we could have some fun!

16. I'm not expecting to grow flowers in a desert,
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime.

17. Gotta find a woman!
Gotta find a woman!
Gotta find a woman!
Gotta find a woman!

18. I'm worse at what I do best,
And for this gift I feel blessed.
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end.

19. Look at the way
We gotta hide what we're doing,
'Cause what would they say
If they ever knew?

20. Zappin' it to ya,
The pressure's everywhere,
Goin' right through ya,
The fever's in the air!

21. Ok, now he was close,
Tried to domesticate you,
But you're an animal.
Baby, it's in your nature.
Just let me liberate you,
You don't need no papers,
That man is not your maker.

22. We can go when we want to,
The night is young and so am I,
And we can dress real neat from our hats to our feet
And surprise 'em with the victory cry.

23. You're just a natural born beehive
Filled with honey to the top.
Well, I ain't greedy, baby,
All I want is all you got.

24. I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles, running 'round my brain.

25. So hard with my girls not around me,
It's definitely not a Nashville party,
'Cause all I see are stilettos.
I guess I never got the memo.

26. Chills run up and down my spine,
Aladdin's lamp is mine,
The dream I dreamed was not denied me.

27. Well, we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight.
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said, “Dear boy, won't you come home with me?”

28. Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality.

29. But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom,
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room.

30. Well now, home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish,
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car,
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars.

31. Arriba y arriba
Y arriba y arriba, por ti sere,
Por ti sere,
Por ti sere.

32. Standing here helpless,
Where do I go?
If you leave me alone
Where do I turn now?
If it don't work out,
As for as I can see,
This isn't the way
That you said it would be.

33. I've been to London, I've been to Paris,
Even way out there to Tokyo,
Back home down in Georgia, to New Orleans,
But you always steal the show.

34. I went walking the other day
Everything was going fine
I met a little boy named Billy Joe
And then I almost lost my mind.

35. 'Cause when you say you will, it always means you won't.
You're givin' me the chills, baby, please, baby don't.

36. Telegram force and ready,
I knew this was a big mistake.
There's a fine line drawing my senses together
And I think it's about to break.

37. He smiled, so I got up and asked for his name.
“But that don't matter,” he said, “'cause it's all the same.”

Oh, your love thawed out,
Yeah, your love thawed out
What was scared and cold.

In honour of the King of Bliss;
Which on this day to be served is
In Reginensi atrio.

40. I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground beneath your knees,
The birds like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing Chinese checkers by the trees.

41. And this time I know it's for real,
The feelings that I feel.
I know if I put my mind to it,
I know that I really can do it.

42. Neither one will give in,
So we gaze at our eight by ten
Thinking 'bout the things that might have been.
It's a dirty rotten shame.

43. Hold it now and watch the hoodwink
As I make you stop, think,
You'll think you're looking at Aquaman.
I summon fish to the dish, although I like the Chalet Swiss,
I like the sushi
'Cause it's never touched a frying pan.

44. Tonight's the night when I go to all the parties down my street.
I wash my hair and I kid myself I look real smooth.
Look over there (where?)
There, here comes Jeanie with her new boyfriend.
They say that looks don't count for much, if so, there goes your proof.

BEAT IT - MICHAEL JACKSON

PINK SHOELACES - DODIE STEVENS (OR TAN SHOES AND PINK SHOELACES, CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH)

8. Keeping my eyes open
I cannot afford to sleep,
Giving away promises
I know that I can't keep,
Nothing fills the blackness
That has seeped into my chest.
I need you in my blood,
I am forsaking all the rest.

COME TO MY WINDOW - MELISSA ETHERIDGE

9. Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Whether you're broke or evergreen.

I've done that Tangredi before, so that can't be it.

We have multiple songs by Billy Joel, Billy Idol, Huey Lewis, and Madonna... which is unorthodox for a Tangredi game.

We have some obscure song titles from famous artists (such as "Fix You" and "Cold Shoulder")... which is also really eyebrow-raising.

And "Boar's Head Carol" is an unusual song title altogether.

I noticed that there are a LOT of these songs that were parodied by Weird Al Yankovic. I counted 38 and there may be some others. May mean nothing since these songs just generally tend to be popular.

I don't know Weird Al's catalogue as well as many others do, but after seeing this comment and looking at the consolidation, it practically sticks out like a sore thumb. Almost to the point of it being impossible to be a coincidence...

Maybe the Tangredi revolves around finding a title that relates in some way to what the altered title of the Weird Al song is....

For example....

5. I Want A New Drug + 62. Yellow Bird (Duck)
29. Royals + 53. Tin Man (Foil)
31. La Bamba + 51. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant (Lasagna)

Maybe???

Getting back to "Boar's Head Carol". Boar's Head is a brand of lunch meat. One type of lunch meat is bologna, which would lead to "My Bologna" (the "My Sharona" parody).

Lucille's TV husband was "Ricky", which was the "Mickey" parody.

"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)
