RIP Gordie Howe

#1 Post by Vandal » Fri Jun 10, 2016 7:45 am

Hockey legend and Detroit icon Gordie Howe has passed away at the age of 88.
Howe, widely known as ‘Mr. Hockey,’ won the Stanley Cup with the Wings four times throughout his impressive career, during which he played over 1,700 games and scored more than 800 goals. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.

In 2014, Howe suffered a significant stroke and has spent the last couple of years recovering quietly with his family.

He is remembered by his four children, and by everyone who loved and admired him as both a hockey player and a man. He will be greatly missed.

I saw him play in the first pro hockey game I attended, alongside his two sons, with the Houston Aeros vs the Birmingham Bulls (WHA).

I met him about 20 years ago shen he made an appearance with our local minor league team. Very nice fellow, obviously full of stories.

And, IIRC, he was the last person to get a fighting penalty in an NHL All-Star Game.
