So far so good. I admit it took me awhile to remember that Sotomeyer wrote that memoir I'd heard her interviewed about before Kagan was nominated.

This is imprecise if not quite incorrect in effect. The Stanley Cup was originally supposed to be given to the top amateur hockey team in Canada. The team that finished with the best record among the top leagues was supposed to get the Cup provided that they would play a Challenge game against a team from another top league.

The first winner of the Cup, the Montreal Hockey Club, had the best record among teams in the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada in 1893 but there was no challenge game against a team from another league that year. The trustees of the Cup thought that the AHAC was the best league so they gave it to the winner of that league. Notably, the league itself did not award the Cup.

In 1894 Osgood Hall from the Ontario Hockey Association issued a challenge for the Cup but the game was never played. In 1895 Queen's University from the OHA did play in a Challenge Game but they lost to the Montreal Hockey Club, who were still the holders. Oddly, the Montreal Victorias had the best record in the AHAC that year and wound up with the Cup. Finally in 1896 the Winnipeg Victorias of the Manitoba Hockey Association successfully won the Challenge game against the Montreal Victorias and took the Cup home. Clearly, it was not a league award.

In 1906 they started giving the Cup to professional teams.

BTW, the NHL started playing for the Stanley Cup in 1917 when the NHL was created out of the National Hockey Association but they still had to play against the winner of other pro leagues to actually hold the Cup. By 1926 the NHL was the only pro league left playing for the Cup. By the rules, theoretically the winner of a different pro league could still have challenges the NHL winner for the Cup until 1947. In the 70s the WHA tried to challenge for the Cup but the trustees denied their bid.

Was it really necessary to emphasize STANLEY and CUP?

10% of the audience thought there was nudity in "The Sound of Music"?

earendel says:
10% of the audience thought there was nudity in "The Sound of Music"?
And this was the Stamford, CT audience.

Viva, Las Vegas?

The audience probably hates & disregards, or worse yet willfully disobeys contestants that tell them "if you don't think you know the answer, please don't vote".

But I don't believe this contestant did. And I dunno why they would vote if they really don't know.

Oh, I understand that. You want to play along when you're sitting in the audience, but your only chance to do so is during the ATA. Not voting when you don't know the answer (even when you know that guessing is bad for the contestants) is a very hard thing to do.

If TPTB really cared about making the ATA helpful, they'd have the warm-up comedians give instructions about not guessing on the ATA before every show. But they're too busy telling the audience when to clap, how loudly to clap, and all the other energetic emoting stuff, so it's up to the contestants to make that occasional, awkward plea.

And in this case, I think it might be more like 10% of the audience not making the connection of that part of the question being a clue about the play, rather than making a mistake about The Sound of Music's X rating.

I've been in the audience back when the show filmed in NYC, & they were allowing audience members to stay for the test. The only ATA I didn't know the answer to, I looked around & asked my neighbors for. They were all too busy hitting their buttons or discussing it with their friends to tell me.
