Amazon Takes On YouTube

Amazon announced yesterday a new video streaming service that allows people to upload content on Amazon and make money off it. They are aiming at more professional level content, not the cat videos and backyard selfies that are a YouTube staple. Signup requires establishing a separate account from the standard Amazon account and providing bank and tax ID info. Companies that have already signed up include Howstuffworks, Conde Nast, and Samuel Goldwyn Films. Those who upload will have four options:
-- Free, ad supported offerings as YouTube currently offers with the producer splitting revenue 55-45 with Amazon
-- Sale or rental through Amazon Video, much the same as Amazon self-publishing works, with revenue split 50-50
--Videos that will be included as part of Amazon Prime, the same as Amazon's own series. Owners will be paid 15 cents/hour (to a maximum of $75,000 a year) for people that watch their videos. However, the top 100 Prime titles each month will also split a $1M bonus pool Amazon offers. Companies must sign up by June 1 in order to be eligible for the monthly bonus.
--Videos that will be offered as part of an add-on subscription called the Streaming Partners Program, for which users pay a monthly fee on top on the Amazon Prime fees, similar to how Amazon currently offers Showtime.
These videos will be available on all the platforms that current Amazon videos are currently offered.
