Thinking this through when not simulating game pressure, should rule out valved vs keyed instruments. Trumpet & tuba both valved, I believe. And I initially ruled out flute because I pictured the Irish-flute players I go to see, but I believe classical flutes are keyed, so this should throw them back in.

And the only reason to throw out the valved instruments is that I know they have fewer valves than keyed have keys.

If my 50/50 had left clarinet & flute I'd probably have chosen the right instrument for the wrong reason.

I can tell you, from attending workshops at bluegrass festivals where they duscuss this, that mandolin & violin are fingered identically. With the hand that compresses the strings.

The question didn't mention this, but another reason is that the mouthpiece is essentially the same (single reed).
