I usually don't watch NCAA women's basketball - primarily because there are so few elite teams, so that many of the games end up one-sided - but this one caught my eye when I saw a mid-game score on the ESPN scroll.
In a "sweet 16" round game of the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament, University of Connecticut's Huskies, one of the best team around year in and year out, beat Mississippi State by 98-38.
As if a 60 point blowout wasn't bad enough, it was the mid-game scores that should be noted.
At the end of the first quarter, UConn was ahead 32-4. Halftime, 61-12. End of three: 84-20.
I guess they don't have the mercy rule in college sports.

Are women's NCAA games divided into quarters, or were those 1st and 3rd quarter scores simply the scores midway through each half?
I have also noticed there are few elite teams. I guess most colleges don't put much emphasis on sports that don't make much money.

Women's games are in Quarters.
I was thinking we were on the path to a Baylor-UConn final, but I discovered this afternoon that they will meet in the semis.

Mississippi State took a while to get on track, then dominated the fourth quarter by 18-14. They didn't lose, they just ran out of time!

To put this in perspective, this wasn't a first round game, in which top seeded teams like UConn play tournament champions from the lowest ranking conferences. Mississippi State tied for second in the SEC, one of the best conferences around in women' s basketball, and won 28 games, including two in the NCAA tournament (one against Michigan State). So, while UConn presumably should have been favored, to win by that margin against a solid team is astonishing.
