Game #158: The Singer and the Song

Identify the 100 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make a few excursions elsewhere.) Then, match them into 40 triples according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Twenty songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.

Alternate answers are probably possible, but (please, God!) there is only one complete solution.

1. When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all,
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall.

2. I heard him say in a voice so gruff,
“I wouldn't eat you cuz you're so tough.”

3. My love, tell me what it's all about.
You got somethin' that I can't live without.
Happiness is so hard to find.
Hey baby, tell me what is on your mind.

4. I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box
Religion is the smile on a dog.

5. We're gonna stimulate some action;
We're gonna get some satisfaction.
We're gonna find out what it is all about.

6. There's no time to waste, let's get the show on the road,
Listen to the music and let your body flow,
The sooner we break down, the longer we got to groove.
Listen to the music and let your body move.

7. I had reconstructive surgery on my jaw,
Looked in the mirror, half my jaw was in the back of my mouth, man,
I couldn't believe it
But I'm still here for you all right now, yo.

8. Let not your heart be troubled,
These tender words I hear,
And resting on His goodness,
I lose my doubt and fear.

9. I'll be the bill you forgot to pay,
I'll be the dream that keeps you awake,
I'll be the song on the radio,
I'll be the reason that you tell the boys no.

10. My voltage regulator cools
When I'm sitting next to you,
Electricity starts to flow
And my indicator starts to glow.

11. Said her name was Georgia Rose (wow)
And her daddy was a dentist.
Said I had a dirty mouth (I got a dirty mouth)
But she kissed me like she meant it.

12. No no no no no no no no no
No no no no no no no no
No no no no no no no no
No no no no no.

13. And he's cute
In his mohair suit
And he keeps his pockets full of spending loot.

14. I said, "Go if you wanna go,
Stay if you wanna stay."
I didn't care if you hung around me,
I didn't care if you went away.

15. And I'd like to change my life, and you know I would
Just to be with you tonight, baby, if I could,
But I've got my job to do, and I do it well,
So I guess that's how it is.

16. If I could grant you one wish,
I'd wish you could see the way you kiss.
Ooh, I love watching you, baby,
When you're driving me crazy.

17. I said, "Who put all those things in your head?
Things that make me feel that I'm mad.
And you're making me feel like I've never been born."

18. If I were a business man
I'd sit behind a desk.
I'd be so successful
I would scare Wall Street to death.

19. I said, "'Who we love and why we love
It's hard to understand,
So let's just sit here on the couch
And face this, man to man."

20. Now one brave man, he tried to take 'em alone
They left him lyin' in a pool of blood,
And laughed about it all the way home.

21. We drown our doubts in dry champagne
And soothe our souls with fine cocaine.
I don't know why I even care,
We'll get so high and get nowhere,
We'll have to change our jaded ways.

22. Kind-a like sugar,
Kind-a like spices,
Kind-a like, like what you do.
Kind-a sounds funny,
But love, honey,
Honey, I love you.

23. I see me with you, and all the things you do
Keep turning round and round in my mind.
Forget the weather we should always be together
And any other thought is unkind.

24. Time is so old and love so brief,
Love is pure gold and time a thief .

25. Listen while I talk to you,
I tell you what we're gonna do,
There's a new thing that's going around
And I'll tell you what they're puttin' down.

26. Swingin' in the living room
Swingin' in the kitchen,
Most folks don't
‘Cause they're too busy bitchin'.
Swingin' in there 'cause
She wanted me to feed her ,
So I mixed up the batter
And she licked the beater.

27. The mountain is high, the valley is low
And you're confused 'bout which way to go,
So I flew here to give you a hand
And lead you into the promised land.

28. Says in my condition
Love's the best physician.
He's prescribed a potion
Full of warm emotion.

29. I was caught in the crossfire of a silent scream
Where one man's nightmare is another man's dream.

30. She wears a long fur coat of mink
Even in the summertime.
Everybody knows from the coy little wink
The girl's got a lot on her mind.

31. Well, I saw a gal walkin' down the street,
The kind of a gal I would love to meet.
She had blonde hair and eyes of blue.
Baby, I'm a-gonna have a party with you.

32. And you wanted to dance, so I asked you to dance,
But fear is in your soul.
Some people call it a one night stand
But we can call it paradise.

33. My mom started bugging with the clothes she chose,
I didn't say nothing at first, I just turned up my nose.
She said, "What's wrong? This shirt cost $20."
I said, "Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!"

34. Hey baby,
You know the future's lookin' brighter
Every morning' when I get up,
Don't be thinkin' 'bout what's not enough now, baby,
Just be thinkin' 'bout what we got.

35. When you count the ones that want you, count me, too,
And if I'm not first on your list, count me blue.

36. He's never near you
To comfort and cheer you
When all those sad tears are fallin', baby, from your eyes.

37. Oh woman, you touched a-my soul now,
Honey, don't a-let go now.

38. I never had much going,
But at least I had you.
How can you walk out knowing
I ain't got nothing left if you do?

39. Prepare yourself, you know it's a must,
Gotta have a friend in Jesus.

40. Never do more than I, I really need.
My mind is racing, but my body's in the lead.

41. I've got my saddle
On my horse.
He's called T-t-t-t-t-trigger,
Of course.

42. This is the way
I always dreamed it would be,
The way that it is, oh oh,
When you are holding me.

43. This is for all the single people
Thinking that love has left them dry:
Don't give up until you drink from the silver cup,
You never know until you try.

44. Deep in the darkest night
I send out a prayer to you,
Now in the world of light
Where the spirit free of the lies
And all else that we despised.

45. I've been sitting here so long
Wasting time, just staring at the phone
And I was wondering should I call you,
Then I thought, maybe you're not alone.

46. He'd end up blowing all his wages for the week
All for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek.

47. Four young chiquitas in Omaha
Waitin' for the band to return from the show,
Feelin' good, feelin' right, it's Saturday night,
The hotel detective, he was outta sight.

48. How the hell did we wind up like this?
Why weren't we able to see the signs that we missed
And try turn the tables?
I wish you'd unclench your fists, and unpack your suitcase,
Lately there's been too much of this
But don't think it's too late.

49. Where can you learn to fly,
Play in sports and skin dive,
Study oceanography?

50. See the man with the broken heart
You'll see that he is sad,
He hurts so bad.
See the girl who has lost the only love she ever had.

51. I try, but I can't seem to get myself to think of anything but you,
Your breath on my face your warm, gentle kiss,
I taste the truth, I taste the truth.
We know what I came here for
So I won't ask for more.

52. Seasons change and so did I,
You need not wonder why.

53. Girl, I’m in love with you,
This ain't the honeymoon
Past the infatuation phase
Right in the thick of love
At times we get sick of love
It seems like we argue everyday.

54. And your mind, your tiny mind,
You know you've really been so blind.
Now 's your time, burn your mind
You're falling far too far behind.

55. If you're filled with affection
You're too shy to convey,
Meditate in my direction,
Feel your way.

56. I might date another race or color,
It doesn't mean I don't like my strong black brothers.

57. First you get down on your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect and
Genuflect, genuflect, genuflect.

58. This is our fork in the road,
Love's last episode,
There's nowhere to go,
Oh no.

59. Keep a-wearing your bracelets
And your new rah rah
A-cross your heart, yeah,
With your living bra.

60. I'll be all right
One way or another,
So let me go
Or make we want to stay.

61. Without you
Life has no meaning or rhyme
Like notes to a song out of time.
How can I repay you for having faith in me?

Raindrops falling on her.
She didn't seem to care,
She sat there and smiled at me

Lose yourself in the sky among the clouds in the heavens.

65. Give no mind to what they say,
It doesn't matter anyway.

66. You may be homely in your neighborhood,
But if you think that you can be an actor,
See Mr. Factor,
He’d make a monkey look good.

67. Love's strange, so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on.
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby.

68. When your girl has left you out on the pavement,
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams.
Your reason for living's your reason for leaving.
Don't ask me what it means.

69. Where is the moment we needed the most?
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost.
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey,
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on.

70. So I'll let it rain
'Cause the rain ain't gonna hurt me,
And I'll let you go
'Though I know it won't be easy.

Tell her she can keep them just the same.
Things have changed, she doesn't love me now,
She's made it clear enough, it ain't no good to pine.

80. Desperate for changing, starving for truth
I'm closer to where I started, I'm chasing after you.

Slowly learning that life is OK.
Say after me,

I put my shoes on the wrong feet.
I'm losin' my mind, I swear;
It might be the death of me,
But I don't care.

85. I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals
I'm breaking in, shaping up
Then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse.
Whoa.

86. Mama gives you money to go to Sunday school,
You trade yours for candy after church is through.

You know you feel like dying.
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you crying?

And then I see you, baby,
And everything's alright, everything's alright.

94. I'm gonna drink a lotta coffee, spend a little cash,
Make that girl love me when I put on some trash.

95. So I'm goin' away now, baby,
And I won't be back till fall.
I'm goin' away now, baby,
And I won't be back till fall.
Just might find me a good girl,
Might not be comin' back at all.

96. There ain't no reason you and me should be alone
Tonight, yeah, baby!
And I got a reason that you're who should take me home tonight!
I need a man that thinks it's right when it's so wrong
Tonight, yeah, baby!
Right on the limits where we know we both belong tonight.

She's the queen of all the teens,
She's the one that I know,
She's the one that loves me so.

And you have not seen nothin' yet,
Everything's stuck together
And I don't know what you expect
Staring into the TV set,
Fighting fire with fire.

99. No more standin' there beside the walls
I done got myself together, baby,

Game #158: The Singer and the Song

Identify the 100 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make a few excursions elsewhere.) Then, match them into 40 triples according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Twenty songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.

Some impressions:

A number of songs that have people's names in them:
My Girl Bill
Ballad of Bonnie & Clyde
Judy in Disguise
Just Like Romeo & Juliet
Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter
Curly Shuffle
CC Ryder
Edge of Glory

Probably not enough to do anything with

A number of songs with identical titles to different songs:
Shake
The Glamorous Life
Lonely People
The Look of Love
Last Dance
Jungle Love
Radioactive

Again, probably not enough to do anything with

A number of songs with parenthetical phrases:
(There's) No Getting Over Me
Judy in Disguise (with Glasses)
Mama Told Me (Not to Come)
(Just Like) Romeo & Juliet
Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)

Same comment as above

This consolidation is correct ... as far as it goes.

There's just one little misspelling in a title that might prove important. You actually don't have to look very far for the fix, but I wouldn't worry about it right now.

All right then. If Frank says so then here goes

CONSOLIDATION #2 with artists. Where no artist was given, I have tried to fill in where I knew, but I have left blank those I did not.
