I knew $100k cold. That's the word's etymology (in this context). I don't remember where I heard that, but it stuck with me. --Bob

I figured it must be, or else this would be one dull question. I figured Dark Horse predated the 1910s (for example, I think I've heard James K Polk referred to as a dark horse), and I figured the word upset had a more tenuous connection to the prescribed meaning.

Of course I'd be out by this point because I thought the African elephant had the biggest brain.

Tough choices here, but I think "dark horse" was used in politics before 1919. If I still have my 50:50 I use it here, hoping that B and C aren't the two remaining choices.
