May be traveling to Charleston for a few days (long weekend) this summer close to the 4th of July holidays. Anybody spent any time there that would be willing to share recommendations on accomodations, sites to see and restaurants?
Not looking for the fanciest hotel in town but willing to spend a little bit more for something nice! We tend to like to try B&B type places if anyone has experience with that.
Thanks!

I had a girlfriend there for a couple of years so I don't know the hotels. I did a quick search however, and found NO B&Bs. The hotels downtown will run you about $200/night and those on the fringe will run about $125.

I have enjoyed 82 Queen and Poogan's Porch
its really hard to go wrong
the carriage ride historical tours are very good in Charleston
Tommy Condon's Irish Pub is fun
AW Shucks or Gilligan's are good for lunch

Thanks, will check them out. I found one that looked interesting called the King George IV Inn. Do you have any experience with that one?

Sadly, it appears there is no room at the Inn. At least not the Meeting Street Inn for the days I need. But it looks nice!

Hmm, yes I would say that counts as experience!

Any idea why they named the hotel after a post-revolution royal? That seems odd.

No explanation on the website I can find. Could have been a lot of Tories amongst the Scots in Charleston at the time but only a guess, as they tended to be more aligned with loyalists. Of course not really sure Scots had much favor for George IV either.

We stayed in a hotel outside of the downtown area when we went. If you're looking for a recommendation for a tourist attraction I would highly recommend you visit The Magnolia Plantation. You can spend all day there and we did. Take the tour of the mansion, the walk through the never-ending garden and the boat ride.

Sounds interesting. My girlfriend is a "never ending garden" type and since this trip is mostly for her I suppose I can suffer through it!
I wonder if I can hit golf balls in the garden? Hmm, probably not...

If the boat ride is the same as the one they had when I was a kid, there is a replica of a ship that shows you just how short folks were back then. I could not stay below deck for more than a few seconds without hitting my head on something.

Maybe because the hotel is on George Street? And maybe because they thought people might be reminded of that swanky hotel in Paris, the George V?
I've never been to a real hotel. Most of them won't let me stay there. I always have to go to the Board and Biscuit. It's okay, but I'd rather have a down comforter and extra pillows, like the ones in hotel ads.

I do not recall that being there. The boat ride I was referring to was an everglades-type boat that provided a ride in the alligator-infested swamp. It was about a 30-40 minute ride.
Tans, the garden walk is really nice even if you are not the garden type. It's where I got the notion to plant hydrangeas around my own place.

No problem, mostly just joshing. I like gardens fine.
