Not much time, so a short one today.

GW is also ticked at FSIL for not getting a chaplain. One of her co-workers is in the Air Force Reserves. He gave her names and contact info for a couple of local chaplains (local being coastal New England; not much in the way of Armed Forces bases that are truly close by, like a town or two over). She has left messages and is waiting for return calls. If no response by week's end, the rabbi is in. But we have been doing all the work here. FSIL had one significant task for the ceremony planning besides showing up, and has blown it. GW is not happy with him.

It almost sounds as if FSIL is dragging his feet, perhaps demonstrating a lack of firm commitment. I hope this is not an ominous portent of things to come.

Do you think FSIL's family would prefer a chaplain? It appears that he doesn't care too much. And while I understand that everyone's unhappy with him right now, you like the rabbi you've found, so why are you doing any extra work at all, trying to find a "coastal New England" chaplain?

I don't want to step on toes here inadvertently. I'd bet that he hasn't brought the subject up with his parents at all. Chaplains are more used to ecumenical-style ceremonies, and since both his parents are ex-service people, the gesture might be better appreciated than using the rabbi, whether he (or the kids) include some part of a Jewish ceremony or not.

If this is her concern, a more productive way for her to be is concerned, rather than ticked. Being ticked at her fsil will not get to the root cause. It will make the root cause worse.
