A few months back our trivia team was tied at the end of the game and the tiebreaker was to guess the number of individual spots drawn. We lost because we grossly underestimated the number.

Clearly John misread the question - he was assuming that "UN members" meant people's names, when the question was asking about countries. I came up with Japan, Qatar and Venezuela right away, so the answer had to be "W".

WWOQ!! The question should have read "member nation," or the producers should have told him so after he started talking about John and Joseph. After that, it's a process of elimination; at least, that's how I would have figured it. J for Japan, Q for Qatar, V for Venezuela, and W?

30K: host has handheld adults who cleary misunderstood Q. Why not this kid? As soon as kid listed 1st names instead of country names I was afraid he would crash.

I did "Japan, Qatar, Vanuatu, Venezuela, OK, must be "W"".

Chris has reread the question before, emphasizing certain words for clarification. I'm not sure emphasizing "UN members" would have clarified anything. One thing he has not done is provide new information not in the question. Not saying he can't, just that there's no precedent for it.

All I'm saying host should have done is what he's done for adults; emphasize words that clarify. UN MEMBERS would have done it, I think. Kid was sharp enough.

This is where my stuck-in-1968 map names screwed me up. I knew Qatar and Venezuela right off the bat, figured "West something" had to be around -- like West Pakistan (when it used to be West and East, before the latter became Bangladesh).

Pakistan (West and East combined) was a single UN member country until Bangladesh broke away. But West Germany was a UN member from 1973 to 1990.
