What a game!!!

It won't go down in history as one of the best Super Bowls ever (that would be Super Bowl XXXII ), but that doesn't stop me from celebrating a great victory!

I texted my big brother last week that the only way we were gonna win it is if Wade Phillips figured out a way to stop Cam Newton, and he replied, "He will." He's right about things almost all the time, and I'm so happy he was right this time.

"This one's for Pat!!" What a guy. Elway, I mean.

I liked the halftime show too.

My favorite commercial was Helen Mirren kicking drunk drivers' butts for Budweiser.

Gov. John Hickenlooper has laid down a bet with North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, and a host of Colorado companies are backing his play.

If the Broncos lose Sunday's Super Bowl 50 matchup with the Carolina Panthers, Hickenlooper will pony up:

• 50 Osprey backpacks filled with school supplies to a North Carolina shelter.

• 50 cases of Pueblo Salsa donated by Milberger Farms, Musso Farms, Pueblo County and the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce.

• 500 boxes of crackers from 34 Degrees Crackers and 500 packages of sausages from Continental Sausage to be donated to a food bank in North Carolina.

Hickenlooper, an unabashed dog lover, also will toss in a generous supply of dog food to a Carolina animal shelter.

If the Panthers lose, McCrory will be on the hook for some of his state's locally made products: 50 cases of turkey burgers and 50 cases of turkey sausages provided by North Carolina-based Butterball LLC to a Colorado food bank, as well as a dog-food donation to an animal shelter in Colorado.

I think that's a great bet. International headquarters for Osprey are located over here on the Back Range (vs. Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, etc. on the Front Range).

My first thought on hearing the score was the hope that Pat's Altzheimer's is not so far advanced that he cannot take great pleasure in the outcome.

My understanding is that he has good days and bad days. I hope this was one of the good days.

Congratulations! I had hope even until only 6-7 minutes left when it was still just 16-10 but that was even more of a spanking than the final score made it look!

That was probably the sloppiest Super Bowl I have ever seen. I can't remember the last time (if there ever was a time) when a Super Bowl 1) had more field goals than touchdowns, 2) had no touchdown play greater than 5 yards, and 3) had no receiving touchdowns. While #50 (technically #48 because of the first two Super Bowls not actually being "Super Bowls") was not memorable, it was significant on many levels.

Although I was rooting for the Panthers, I am happy to see Kentucky Wildcat alum Danny Trevathan get a ring. Man, was his hands all over the football last night or what?

I loved the pre-game intros of all 49 previous MVPs. I couldn't believe that only Harvey Martin has passed away of all those guys.

Up until Eli Manning, it appeared that, to a man, they all walked with noticeable, but varying degrees of, stiffness.

I hadn't seen pictures of Fred Biletnikoff since his playing days, so I was taken aback to see him as a geezer. Some guys showed their age, as expected. I was surprised at how many early guys still looked really good. Marcus Allen looked as if he could play tomorrow.

I agree on all points. Especially the stiffness in the guys as they walked. Even the ones still playing (i.e. Aaron Rodgers). I made that same comment to my wife.

I thought it was great when the crowd booed the three murderers: Ray Lewis, Tom Brady and Deion Branch. Well played!

I'm pretty sure that murder is not the first thing that comes to everybody's mind anymore when Tom Brady shows up. It's all about his balls now.

To paraphrase Dennis Green "they are who I thought they were" unfortunately I was 2 weeks early with my prediction. I had predicted that game for my Cardinals. Unfortunately my "D" did not step up.
When it was 13-7 at the half I said to the Carolina fans in the room "don't worry they have always been a good second half team this year"

I did manage to find the answer to one of my three statistical questions.

Last night was the first Super Bowl in 22 years that had no receiving touchdowns, and only the fourth such Super Bowl in history. Super Bowl XXVIII (Dallas/Buffalo, 1994) had four touchdowns--two rushing TDs by Emmitt Smith, one rushing TD by Thurman Thomas, and one fumble return TD by James Washington.

Incidentally, that Super Bowl also had more field goals than touchdowns: five FGS--three for Dallas and two for Buffalo. No, Scott Norwood did not kick those FGs. He was already gone from the team by then.

Happy for ya, Broncos fans. Sad for ya, Panthers fans. I had friends and family on both sides of the fence. I was, above all, just hoping for a good game. It wasn't exactly that...very sloppy.

I was not exactly surprised at the outcome. In the 2 weeks leading up to the game, I kept telling anybody who would listen that the Panthers reminded me a little too much of my Bills before their first Super Bowl appearance...young, cocky and looking unstoppable going in.

I kept telling anybody who would listen that it was all on Wade Phillips. Then in one of the post-game interviews, he said, Nah, we didn't do anything special. I dunno if I believe that, but it's consistent with how Von Miller talked about the game.

CBS showed a graphic last night with the Broncos logo superimposed over the Super Bowl 50 logo, but I can't find it this morning. I found something identified as being on Pinterest that comes close, but I can't get in to Pinterest without registering, and I don't want to do that. Oh well.

I should have added: congratulations to the Broncos and all their fans. It was a well-deserved victory.

I think Mike Shula (Panther's OC) was completed outmatched in this game. He never wavered from the "run up the gut on first down" philosophy even when it didn't work the first dozen times. They threw the playbook at the Cardinals, but it looks like the pages got stuck together for this one.

There was one shot of Shula, and if ever I saw a "never waver" face, that was it. It was during the fourth quarter, so it was also a bit grim.

I'll go on the record as saying that it was Peyton's last rodeo. After the game, one of the on-field announcers asked him about retiring, Peyton said he had no plan, and the announcer jokingly called him on it. I'm with the announcer. That Papa John's embrace and the Budweiser mention seemed pretty well planned to me, considering Peyton's well-deserved reputation for those lightning fast neurons he's got racing through his brain.

Brains aside, though, ESPN or CBS showed a clip comparing some of his old Colts touchdown passes to the last few weeks. Forget it! He's a brilliant general, but the zip in those passes is gone.

And he knows he's leaving the team in good hands (go Oz!).

I just hope I get Cam on my BB fantasy team again next year.

You might not remember it (I certainly don't) but Super Bowl V (a Colts' 16-13 win over Dallas) featured 11 turnovers (including 7 by Baltimore, the most ever by a winning team), 14 penalties (which was a lot back then) and a blocked extra point.

It earned the moniker "The Blunder Bowl".

I lost a lot of respect for Cam Newton...we'll have to see if he recovers from this.

He's not the first player to wilt in his first Super Bowl, and he got no help from either his teammates or OC Mike Shula, who called a TERRIBLE game that constantly put the offense in bad situations.

But his behavior after the game did not bode well for the future, and shrinking from trying to recover that fumble in a season-defining moment was awful. He would have gotten it if he had dived for it.
