leader of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks....brought a bit of hipster cool to old-style hillbilly/country/western swing and such.
They were San Francisco contemporaries of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, etc.

They were awesome! I had a work colleague who took him everywhere -- house, car, camping -- she always had a Dan Hicks recording around.

I saw him (and His Hot Licks) open for The Brian Setzer Orchestra on two occasions. I always regarded them as being among the best of all the opening bands I'd ever seen.

I DID NOT know this. He looked much younger, as if he were a contemporary of the next generation of musicians. This also helps explain how he was such an excellent, polished performer.
RIP, Dan.
