Also the 27th was the anniversary (1967) of the Apollo 1 fire, killing Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee and Ed White, the first American to walk in space.

Yep, late January/early February isn't exactly safe for astronauts. 27th is Apollo 1, 28th is Challenger, and February 1 is the Columbia disaster.

I'll never forget that day. My radio alarm, set to a music station, woke me up. I wake up slowly so at first I thought the chatter I heard was just a bad joke. Then my brain kicked into gear and I realized, "Holy shit. That's not a joke."
May we never forget their sacrifice, and may we never stop advancing the work for which they gave their lives. --Bob
