How Do I Leave a Birthday Party Early?

I am exhausted! We took an early exit to Vegas on Tuesday because our after tax season trip to Hawaii was cancelled, because of the ATA Bankruptcy. :x
We have to go 50 miles away tonight to an "unimportant" birthday party but we owe this couple our presence because they have come to a couple of our events over the years. I am just trying to figure out an excuse to leave after an obligatory 3 hours to 3 1/2 hours at the dinner party.
Any creative and polite ideas will be helpful. :)

Thanks!

This isn't creative, but I left Toastmasters early Friday because of an obligation at work. Before the meeting started, I advised the Toastmaster and both speakers that it would happen and apologized. I know that's not the same as your situation. My other suggestion would be to leave at the same time as the first couple to leave -- there's bound to be somebody there with babysitter problems or something.

How about this:

Early in your first conversation with Mr. or Mrs. Host, mention your recent work schedule and your current exhaustion. Explain how you wouldn't miss the BD event but that reality tells you that you're going to crash pretty early. Then stick around for whaatever period of time is comfortable, catch your hosts eye and make your leave.

Not creative, but it's a win-win situation for all. You get to stay only as long as you want and your hosts are pleased that you were able to get there at all.

Sounds pretty good, Jaybee. When in doubt, tell the truth. And in my case it is true. :(

I think everybody pretty well understands about "tax season." I would have been horrified to have been invited to a party this weekend, and I have only one single tax return to finish.

You have to get up early tomorrow because you are meeting with somebody to do their taxes.
