Answer: A 1957 event led to the creation of a natl. historic site in this city, signed into law by a pres. whose library is now there too.
Randi had $6,000 and bet it all. She thought it was
Springfield
, which was wrong. Claudia, tied for first at $13,800, also bet everything, wrote
Austin
and was wrong too. Defending champ Mike bet everything and wrote
Atlanta
, which was also wrong. (I thought it was
Boston
.) The right city was
Little Rock
.
Mike and Claudia got $2,000 and Randi just $1,000. There will be 3 new players tomorrow.

Has that ever happened before? Wow all one person needed was $1 to win.

I did not find Q hard. My brain immediately gave me Brown vs Board of Education. Complete w/ Norman Rockwell cover of tiny kid escorted by National Guard legs. What took my slower & slower these days brain time, but not through end of J! music, was coming up w/ Little Rock.
I don't think J! should have let contestant who couldn't defend because they got good job come back. I didn't know they did that.
Other people have to decide not to play based on jobs.
I guess this means they let them play eventually?
But it still isn't fair 3rd contestant has to face 2 champs who didn't previously tie.

As I understand it, part of the problem was that Alex was injured and therefore wasn't available to tape the next day as scheduled. She was prepared to defend if taping had proceeded as originally scheduled. --Bob

That puts the blame on Alex, then. Not how he presented it on show.

That gate swung both ways. Her original tape date was canceled because Alex Trebek had surgery (on his hip or knee, I don't remember). I imagine since she got bumped to a day that didn't work for her, they decided to accommodate.
Edit: Bob beat me to it.

That's interesting. There were 2 returning players today, but none tomorrow. It all balances out.
Randi's probably kicking herself for not betting $5,999.

Yes, this happened once before, in 1984. The second ever Trebek episode, I think. All three contestants lost everything when they gave the same incorrect response of "What is January 1, 2000?" to a clue that asked for the first day of the 21st century.

There have been six 3x$0 epic fails, including tonight.
***
Edit: all this was already mentioned, but I've included a link to the regular partial recap on TheJeopardyFan.com for you to gape at in disbelief, plus a link explaining Claudia's hiatus.
Here's what makes this even more of an epic fail than that Teen Tournament debacle -
two of tonight's contestants were returning champions.
Claudia's run from last fall was interrupted when Alex had to go in for knee surgery, so she returned in this episode, along with [str]current[/str] defending champion Mike. Worse luck still, they were both tied going into FJ.

Didn't feel that hard to me, but obviously those things are subjective, and I bet there's lots that easy for you but impossible for me. To me, it boiled down to "Something historic happened in 1957, in a state capital where later there was a president from there" So the Presidents' states are MA, TX, CA, MI, GA, CA, TX, AR, TX, IL. Of those, AR/Clinton/Little Rock makes the most sense.
As for the wagering, I think the co-leaders probably made the right bets. If you're actually tied, the only bets that make sense are all or nothing. I have no idea why Randi bet anything, much less all of hers, though. The only way she could win was if the others both bet big and got it wrong.

Good logic, except that Brown vs Board of Education happened in Topeka in 1954.

Did she assume she was going to lose pretty quickly? Otherwise, the same tape date she walked away from could have come up on the normal schedule if she had gone on to win several more matches. It seems to me that the defending champ needs to make Jeopardy! enough of a priority to come back whenever asked, or expect to be disqualified. Jobs come and go, but Jeopardy! is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Also, the ending of the FJ round was a little suspect and arbitrary, since they rang the bell with one clue still on the board. It may have been totally legit, but we never know if they are intentionally influencing the outcome, since there is no transparency regarding the clock that allegedly exists but which no one has ever seen. If they had just let them play the final clue, the game would have had a very different ending.

Confessor points out I'm completely screwed up:
Yah, so if I'd have been on & won, I'd have won for entirely wrong reasons.
Figures.
But Kansas didn't fit the "president from state honored event much later" part of Q, so hobbly MyBrain rejected it.
Actually, I just looked & Q didn't say pres honored event much later, I just assumed that. Wrong again. Still right answer, somehow.
MyBrain even got the wrong visual, as the Little Rock students were all high schoolers.
Anyway; Eisenhower's library is in Abilene, not Topeka. Not that I knew that without looking it up.

Actually that was very easy. I would have gotten it right away. Well, I lived in Arkansas for 10 years or so. Little Rock Central High School.

I saw the thread title before seeing the game and was expecting a brutal FJ! clue that made me do a desperate search around the map in 30 seconds to try to luck into the right city. Instead the subject header's bark was worse than the bite as 1957 took me right to Little Rock.
The weekly poll on the J! Board should have the clue polling way above the truly tough FJ! clue from the 1/14 game.
For the mention of the Rockwell painting it's The Problem We All Live With and it's about Ruby Bridges attending a New Orleans school in 1960. By coincidence Ruby Bridges was on The View this morning to tell her story.

That would be almost as stupid.
The third place player's only intelligent bet was 0.
The two players tied for first have two intelligent bets, 0 or everything. Bet 0 and they ensure a win if the other player misses the question; bet everything and they ensure a win if they get it right.
Since the third place player can't catch either of the first 2 if they bet 0 (or even if they bet just enough to stay ahead of her if they miss), then she should plan to hold onto all her money and hope to finish ahead of the others if they miss. $5,999 sounds good but what happens if one of the first two decides to get cute and bet all but $2 or $5 or $10?
If there's only one sequence of events that allows the third place player to win the game, then he or she should hope that happens and bet accordingly. The third place player got what she needed but she still blew it.
As for FJ, it was about a five second get. The only 1957 event I could think of that would trigger that kind of commemoration would be the Little Rock school desegregation, and reading the rest of the clue, it was logical that the governor would be Clinton and that his presidential library would be there.

Point of order: ties resulting in co-champions were abolished this past year. A tie game will now result in a tiebreaker.

Re ties w/ co-champions coming back being abolished; that's sad. I liked seeing co-champions coming backnto duke it out again.
