I didn't see that one coming.

Mrs. Spiff was just watching Love Actually last night, in which he was in it (as was seemingly every well-know British actor of 11 years ago). Sad to see him go, he was a good one with a distinctive voice.

He had the best villainous debut role since Richard Widmark in Kiss of Death and probably should have gotten an Oscar nomination. If you have a chance, check him out in An Awfully Big Adventure opposite Hugh Grant. Seeing how the two of them play Captain Hook is a great study in how different actors shade the same character.

Here's one of my favorite Rickman roles:

No one's mentioned Truly Madly Deeply. Not even the online obits. So I will. I, who very rarely even go to movies, loved it loved it loved it.

Didn't make me eager to have surgery when I really needed it though.

No one here has mentioned "Die Hard," either. I'd guess that most guys know him from that, too.

RIP, Hans Gruber.

<sniff>

He was going to be my next husband. :(

I just never got the chance to mention it to him. Or to my current husband, for that matter. Very sad.

Nooooooooooooooooooo.............

Starting with Die Hard, I said that IMHO Rickman was the best screen villain ever. After seeing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, I said that JK Rowling waited to be born so that she would be the right age to write the Harry Potter books when Rickman was the right age to play Snape. After seeing Bottle Shock, which makes me smile whenever I think of it, including right now, I couldn't admire him more for his wonderful versatility. He wasn't just the best villain ever anymore.

I too loved him in Quigley Down Under, so perfectly hateable. That movie made me a big fan of Laura San Giacomo too. I saw Quigley after I saw Pretty Woman, and I had to check the credits to figure out where I'd seen her before. Now I have to see An Awfully Big Adventure to watch Rickman play Hook.

Only 69 -- dangit! I bet there was a Gandalf type role in his future, if he'd lived to play it.

-- America would be a better place if leaders would do more long-term thinking. -- Wilma Mankiller
