4.8 earthquake last night.

No damage, but Mom has to straighten all her pictures. I thought a truck or car had hit the building.

It's been a while since I've felt an earthquake. Can't say that I've missed them, but I would feel more at ease if the earth around these parts were letting off steam a little more frequently. --Bob

I feel that way about the Gulf of Mexico and hurricanes. I don't wish for them, but it's been a number of years that the Gulf has been getting warmer and warmer without a major event to dissipate it. IIRC, Katrina was a Cat 1 when it approached Florida, cut across the state, and hit the Gulf. It then grabbed a season's worth of warmth, and we all remember the results.

Why? There is zero evidence to support the theory that that would lessen any future quakes.

Really almost the opposite, actually. A cluster of small quakes can be the precursor to "the big one." My own opinion, though, is that Bob and other Californians ought to direct their worries several hundred miles north.

These sites differentiate between small quakes "letting off steam" lessening the strength of eventual bigger ones and small quakes being precursors to bigger ones. Bob says he'd feel more at ease if we were having more small quakes, but it is generally accepted that those are probably signs that a big one is coming. I'd rather not have them.

Oh I don't know. I think we need someone official. You're as close as we have.
