Saw Star Wars - The Force Awakens this morning. It's not something I normally would have seen this early in the run, but Mrs. Spiff had a free use-or-lose ticket from the theater chain which surprisingly was good on opening weekend, so she got the ticket a few weeks ago -- 10:10am on Sunday. It was a sellout when I got there about 9:40.

Background -- I'm not that big a Star Wars fan. I saw the original many times in the theaters (in the pre-VHS days, it ran in one local theater for two years), but only saw the next two films once in the theater, and only a smattering of times since. Never have seen the prequels except for snippets here or there (I mean, it's not like we didn't know what was going to happen).

That being said, if you're a fan of the series, you'll like it. J. J. Abrams did well with the film, and I only counted one lens flare (his trademark, which was waaaaay overdone in Star Trek Into Darkness, even by his admission). The story picks up with a good enough text explanation at the start to jump start things, the new characters fit in well, and the old characters are a welcome sight. Harrison Ford does his older version of Han Solo well, and the new actors hold up their weight as well.

That's all I'll say about it. Go see it if you like the series. There is nothing to be afraid of.
