Dang. Daniel and Claire had the right hunch, but couldn't reason it out enough for a confident answer. You can see through your corneas and there are no obvious blood vessels in front of your vision. On the other hand, if you have even a vague idea of the function of those other three organs, how could they possibly work without blood vessels?

As anyone who has travelled to Canada should know, arms are pretty restricted up there. No handguns -- rifles are allowed if you have the right permits for hunting -- no mace (exception: mace in large spray cans labeled BEAR REPELLANT), no pepper spray, etc.

If any of my gun-toting friends plan to drive to Canada, I remind them they need to leave everything gun-related behind (and that includes gun magazines and catalogs in open sight -- no sense giving Immigration Canada an excuse to search your car!) One friend took my advise and scraped his NRA sticker off his car bumper, another trigger for IC to check you out more thoroughly. He did put on a new one once he returned.

(I sometimes get asked why folks can't bring arms over the border. What folks forget -- and do at their own peril -- is that Canada is a sovereign country; their land, their rules. It's not like going over to New Jersey.)

$30K: replacement Q: contestants reasoned it out, then walked away from it. Obvious answer, for reasons various people have cited. People receiving cornea transplants do not, I believe, even need immunosuppressant drugs? I've got to check that, but there aren't any blood vessels in the cornea. I don't think.

On the other hand, if you have even a vague idea of the function of those other three organs, how could they possibly work without blood vessels?

Well, not exactly! They are not obvious unless you look but they are easily seen. In fact the eye provides the best and most direct visualization of blood vessels anywhere in the body.

Why, there they are now...



In fact the superficial retinal vessels do lie ABOVE the retinal inner and outer nuclear layer that contain the various nerve cells and photoreceptors with which we form the image that the brain can "see". It is just that the retinal nerves are designed in such a complex and amazing way that we are able to compensate for their presence in most cases. You have all likely seen the "shadow" of retinal vessels when someone shines a bright light in your eye (and thus overloading the retinal nerves cells). Admittedly there are very few vessels in the small central and most sensitive part of the retina known as the fovea but they go right up to the edge!

However I agree that the answer should be pretty obvious if you have even the most minimal information about the anatomical construction of the other organs. And although the cornea proper has no blood vessels rest assured that white cells can find their way into the cornea. They are swimming about in the aqueous humor directly behind the cornea and can infiltrate the cornea if necessary when needed (such as a corneal ulcer form contact lens wear).
