Lyrically Speaking: Match Game

#1 Post by astrnomr » Fri Apr 11, 2008 9:04 am

For today's quiz, you will have to discover the theme. Then, using that theme, match the songs into pairs.

1. But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone?

2. Dance all night, get real loose
You don't need no bad excuse
Dance all night with anyone
Don't let nobody pick your fun

3. I live in a house that looks out over the ocean
And there's some stars that fell from the sky
Livin' up on the hill

4. I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

5. Cause they're waiting for me
They're looking for me
Every single night they're driving me insane
Those men inside my brain

6. I've done no harm
I keep to myself
There's nothing wrong with my
State of mental health

7. So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky

8. We got a lotta little teenage blue-eyed groupies
Who do anything we say
We got a genuine Indian guru
Who’s teachin’ us a better way

9. Well the kids don't eat
And the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music
In the whole damn street

10. You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
I say his body's too young to look like his

Bonus: Identify today's theme.

Double Bonus: Using the theme, match songs into pairs. (4 points each.)

Final Bonus: Which of these songs turned into reality?

For today's quiz, you will have to discover the theme. Then, using that theme, match the songs into pairs.

1. But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone?
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - Police

2. Dance all night, get real loose
You don't need no bad excuse
Dance all night with anyone
Don't let nobody pick your fun
Shake It Up - Cars

3. I live in a house that looks out over the ocean
And there's some stars that fell from the sky
Livin' up on the hill

4. I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones

5. Cause they're waiting for me
They're looking for me
Every single night they're driving me insane
Those men inside my brain
Dream Police - Cheap Trick

6. I've done no harm
I keep to myself
There's nothing wrong with my
State of mental health
Who Can It Be Now - Men at Work

7. So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky

8. We got a lotta little teenage blue-eyed groupies
Who do anything we say
We got a genuine Indian guru
Who’s teachin’ us a better way
Cover of the Rolling Stone - Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show

9. Well the kids don't eat
And the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music
In the whole damn street
Squeezebox - The Who

10. You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
I say his body's too young to look like his
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

Bonus: Identify today's theme. - Groups and Songs with the names of those groups in the titles (A theme I used back in December 2004, though I don't think I used any of these pairs....)

Double Bonus: Using the theme, match songs into pairs. (4 points each.) - 1-5, 2-10, 4-8, 6-9, and 3-7 by default. #7 sounds very familiar, but #3's a complete blank, so I doubt it'd help to rack my brain any longer over it....

Final Bonus: Which of these songs turned into reality? - I'm going to guess you're going for #8, since how could RS not put Dr. Hook on the cover after releasing that song....

I predict a lot more high scores today, though I might be able to defend my 4th (4th!?!?!?!?) place standing despite missing 2 of the songs....

Only know two, but those seem to be a match and some bonus points.

4. I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL - ROLLING STONES

8. We got a lotta little teenage blue-eyed groupies
Who do anything we say
We got a genuine Indian guru
Who’s teachin’ us a better way
COVER OF THE ROLLING STONE - DR. HOOK AND THE MEDICINE SHOW

Bonus: Identify today's theme.
SONGS WHOSE TITLES INCLUDE ANOTHER ARTIST/GROUP'S NAME

Double Bonus: Using the theme, match songs into pairs. (4 points each.)

Final Bonus: Which of these songs turned into reality?
DR. HOOK'S. THEY LATER APPEARED ON THE COVER OF ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Spoiler
1. But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone?
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The Police

2. Dance all night, get real loose
You don't need no bad excuse
Dance all night with anyone
Don't let nobody pick your fun
Shake It Up - The Cars

3. I live in a house that looks out over the ocean
And there's some stars that fell from the sky
Livin' up on the hill
Please Come to Boston - Racist Asshole David Allan Coe (I think the original is Kenny Loggins, but I'm not sure)

4. I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones

5. Cause they're waiting for me
They're looking for me
Every single night they're driving me insane
Those men inside my brain
Dream Police - Cheap Trick

6. I've done no harm
I keep to myself
There's nothing wrong with my
State of mental health
Who Can It Be Now - Men At Work

7. So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky
More Than a Feeling - Boston

8. We got a lotta little teenage blue-eyed groupies
Who do anything we say
We got a genuine Indian guru
Who’s teachin’ us a better way
? After further consideration, I'll go with On the Cover of the Rolling Stone. I don't know the real artist, so I'm going with the fictitious band in Almost Famous. I believe they were called Stillwater.

9. Well the kids don't eat
And the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music
In the whole damn street
Squeeze Box - The Who

10. You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
I say his body's too young to look like his
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

Bonus: Identify today's theme.
The Artist name in one song is part of the Title of another song.

Double Bonus: Using the theme, match songs into pairs. (4 points each.)
#1 & #5 (The Police, Dream Police)
#2 & #10 (The Cars, Fast Car)
#3 & #7 (Boston, Please Come to Boston)
#6 & #9 (The Who, Who Can It Be Now)
That leaves #4 and #8. So maybe I can get #8. I don't know any bands with "Sympathy" in their names, and it doesn't sound like a Devil In a Woodpile Song, which is the only "devil" band I am thinking of now. So that leaves either Papa Was a Rolling Stone or On the Cover of the Rolling Stone. Sounds like the latter. Wish I knew who did it...

Final Bonus: Which of these songs turned into reality?
Well, that's hard to say. I don't really believe in magic, so #1's out.
The Cars probably shook something up at some point in your lives, but that's probably not what you mean.
Probably R.A.D.A. Coe at some point went to Boston, but again, probably not what you mean.
Who knows if the Rolling Stones had actual sympathy for the devil?
Despite what Dick and Georgie would prefer, there's no such thing as Dream Police. Yet.
Someone unexpected has probably knocked on the doors of people from Men At Work at some point, but again, probably not what you're looking for.
People in Boston have likely had experiences that were more than feelings, but again...
The band in Almost Famous ended up on the cover of Rolling Stone. Maybe the real artist did, too. That's my tentative answer for now. Hope I got the song right!
I can't see the scene in Squeeze Box happening AFTER The Who recorded that song, so that's right out.
Tracy Chapman is likely to have been in, driven, and maybe even owned a fast car, but the story in the song is unlikely, I think.

So that leaves me with #8, the song I'm guessing is On The Cover of the Rolling Stone.

This one-hit wonder is the cousin of Kenny Loggins, and he's the only answer I accepted. It was a top-10 hit (#5) in 1974. This isn't a contest of who can find the most obscure remake of a song.
