Flying out this afternoon for the Nationals (bridge). I'll be in Denver for a week and a half. --Bob

The 90-minute shuttle ride from the airport had me arrive just too late to play the evening charity game last night, so I'll dive right into the thick of the action by playing the Life Master Pairs today and (I hope) tomorrow. --Bob

90 minutes?! Was there snow?

90 minutes sounds about right to me. The tournament's at the Sheraton Denver Downtown. You land halfway to Kansas, then you gotta get downtown, and driving in downtown Denver is no picnic. Plus I'm sure they had other stops on the way there.

(Just kidding about the halfway to Kansas part.)

(Sorta.)

Yes, there was, and I think I was the fifth stop. --Bob

Two below-average sessions yesterday have us playing in a regionally rated pairs event today. One very frustrating hand from the evening session. We reached a wonderful grand where all I needed to do was pick up the three missing trumps. Unfortunately, one of them was the Queen and I misguessed which way to go. That was basically a top-to-bottom swing across six sections. Sometimes the bear gets you. --Bob

Had an okay afternoon session to get on the board with my first 1.01 master points of the tournament, but I made a few too many brain-dead plays in the evening to ack up my third below-average session in four tries.

Today, if we can find teammates, we'll be playing the Open Board-a-Match Teams. --Bob

Found teammates, but had two below-average sessions to drop out of the event. Back to regional pairs tomorrow, and then, I hope, a partner for the Blue Ribbon Pairs. --Bob

A truly lousy afternoon session, followed by an above-average evening session worth another 3.56 masterpoints closes out my November. Happy New Month to all.

Tomorrow, I hope to find a partner for the three-day Blue Ribbon Pairs. --Bob

Tough hand and you can't really investigate to get a handle on the distribution. Someone will trump something when they were 2-1 to begin with.
What was the opening lead?

The heart jack.

Today was a much better day. A good player from my area set me up with a partner for the Blue Ribbon Pairs and he turned out to be both fun and skilled. We scratched both sessions with games a bit above average to qualify comfortably for day 2. Getting to day 3 is the hard part but if we manage that we're guaranteed to be in the overalls. --Bob

I've now received the official word that we qualified for day 2. It looks like our session awards were 1.40 and 1.35 platinum points, for a total of 2.75 so far in the event. I'll have to improve my play if I want to add to that haul, though. We can't count on collecting the same gifts that were handed to us in day 1. --Bob

The heart jack.
The jack from QJ doubleton. I know you are playing against really good people (mostly) in that event. Did they have any interesting lead conventions on the card?
BTW one of your opponents won the 0-10k imp pairs yesterday

It may have been the Queen or they may have been playing Rusinow leads. --Bob

When my parents taught me to play bridge they taught me to use Rusinow leads without mentioning anything about it. That was just the way to play.

The second day of the Blues is a tough field. We didn't crack 40% either session. Regional pairs today with a strong player from my area. --Bob

Our afternoon session was my first good session of the tournament. We had about a 63% game to come in second across three sections for 5.10 master points. We didn't back it up, though. Our second session was just below average, and our overall award for finishing 12th in the event was less then our session award for the afternoon.

Today it's day 1 of the Keohane North American Swiss, my last chance to add some more platinum points to my collection. --Bob

Three relatively close wins and five not-so-close losses means that I'm out of my last national event of the year, having collected my final 1.59 platinum points until Reno this spring. Tomorrow, it's back to regional pairs. --Bob

Good luck!

I'm in Las Vegas and playing a totally different card game.

Once again, my partner of the day and I followed a good first session (58%) with a mediocre second session (53%), this time good for a tie for 7th overall and 3.41 gold points. My tournament concludes tomorrow with my team from yesterday reassembled to try our luck in a regional Swiss teams event. --Bob

Thanks, but I'm not feeling like a "yay." I never dreamed I'd be sitting at only 17.42 points for the tournament with only one day to go. --Bob
