John Bel Edwards has defeated David Vitter and is the Governor-elect of Louisiana. Maybe the Democratic Party isn't completely dead in the South. --Bob

Vitter also announced that he will not seek re-election to the Senate in 2016. --Bob

I think what separated John Bel Edwards from other Southern Democrats (Pryor, Hagan, Landrieu, and--most recently--Conway) who have lost since 2010 is that Edwards ran as a real Democrat instead of Republican Lite. Edwards campaigned heavily on progressive-to-liberal issues like healthcare expansion. He was also helped by other factors--such as Gov. Jindal's huge disapproval rating, Vitter's hypocrisy, and the public endorsement from Republican Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne.

The vote wasn't even close last night. Edwards won 56-44 in a state that Romney won by nearly 20 points.

Just shows that you don't have to be a DINO squish to win in the South.

Louisiana has changed since I lived there. Going to a prostitute can apparently hurt a politician now.

The state will most likely still vote Republican in 2016 however.

If Trump wins the nomination in 2016 I don't think any state will vote Republican.
