Hurricane Patricia, now bearing down on Mexico's Pacific coast, has become the strongest hurricane ever recorded. It has sustained winds of 200 mph and atmospheric pressure in the storm's eye is down to 880 millibars (25.99 inches of mercury). Catastrophic damage is expected. --Bob

A local (I think) NPR person called it Katrina. After they'd said "most extreme" etc. I think it was slip of the tongue, but we all can see why.

Somehow, I think Puerto Vallarta might not be a game-show giveaway destination after Patricia. :(

(Not that it has been for awhile, but it is convenient to West Coasters.)

It's scary looking from up top:

Yeah, they're saying parts of Texas may get two feet of rain. And you thought the South Carolina flooding was bad...

Official death toll: zero. A combination of luck (relatively remote landfall and quick dissipation) and good planning. --Bob

USA Today reports 6 deaths - two from a falling tree and 4 from an automobile accident.

Although tragic for those six, it's still a fair sight lower than it would have been if it had hit a more populated area.

We had 8 1/2 inches of rain over the two days, much needed, and no flooding up here in The Woodlands.

Honestly, the news media made it sound like someone could film a remake of Waterworld with what's left of Mexico when it was about to hit. Twitter was all #PrayForMexico, and everything.
