I just watched an episode that was aired here about 2 am. I think it's the October 14th episode and the local station aired it on the wrong day. Anyway, this was one of the questions.

2. Common among men in crowded restrooms, the phobia paruresis is more commonly known by what name?
A: Bashful Kidney Complex
B: Modest Colon Disorder
C: Sheepish Stomach-itis
D: Shy Bladder Syndrome

To me, it seems that either A or D could be correct. I've definitely heard it called Bashful Kidney. I'm not sure I've ever heard it called Shy Bladder. And yet, the "correct" answer was D.
Wikipedia lists both terms among several colloquialisms for this phenomenon.

I'm just the opposite... I've never heard the term "bashful kidney" before, but I have definitely heard of "shy bladder" before. And as someone who is often afflicted by this, I have even used the term before. My kidneys are too busy making stones to be bashful about anything...

And I'd only heard of the phenomenon as "pee-shy". Which gets to the point *at* "the point", I'd say.

I don't know why sufferers from this don't just head for a stall with a closed door. I have it on reasonably good authority that even men's rooms have a few.

I've never heard "bashful kidney" and I have heard "shy bladder." Which I guess is far to be preferred to "gregarious bladder." --Bob

I've heard of bashful kidney also. If I was playing I would have said I've heard both terms used before and don't know the difference.

I googled it, and bashful kidney syndrome is identified as an actual condition. It got 2,110 hits.

Shy bladder got 111,000 hits. But I don't think that's conclusive. I think it was a bad question.

Because just knowing other people are milling around the restroom is enough to keep the bladder shy. It doesn't work for me...

Y'know, women (& probably men too, but I can only speak for me, &, of course, therefore all womenkind) have a problem when people keep knocking on the stall door trying to get in. And trying the handle & so forth. And calling out "is anyone in there?" even when the door is obviously locked. From the inside. When we are trying to excrete. Peeing, I can't ever say I've been inhibited from. Other than by people saying "we have no restroom", but that's really more a matter of mind over matter, & a case in which I'd really like to say "OK, then I'll just pee out back" except they'd probably send the police.


But knowing people other than myself really need to use the toilet has that tightening effect on my bowels.


I do not know if it has a name (anal-retentive is not the name, as that applies, medically, to people who can hardly ever, uh, let it loose).

If anyone says the restroom is for employees only, just ask for an application.

Paruresis is the official name for what the site I found (can't cite on tablet) calls this.

Very interesting! Looks like a rehash of the "Iron Horse" goof that Doug Van Gundy saw. Luckily this one didn't affect the outcome of the game, but the contestant definitely would have had a case to come back if she had used any lifelines on that.

Seems like a perfectly fine question. A Google search for "Bashful Kidney Complex" returns no results. Even in the Wikipedia entry that you cite, there is no use of the term "complex", which is the key part, while Shy Bladder Syndrome does appear.

Now, if "pee fright" was a choice, then I would say that it is the more common term.

The only term I have ever heard (and used) is "Stage Fright."

Six weeks later, the B.C. comic strip takes sides on this issue. Coincidence? Or do the B.C. writers lurk on The Bored?
