Decades '15 - Day 1

#1 Post by I Love the 80s! » Thu Oct 01, 2015 5:32 am

Greetings, and welcome to the latest version of Decades. We're going to start with a decade most everyone here got to experience in full:

The 80s

WINNERS & LOSERS

Home video cassette recorders (VCRs) were introduced in the 1970's and gained popularity in the early 1980s. Two types of VCRs (mainly) became engaged in a format war to sway users toward their technology.

Which format "won"? (2 points)

Which format "lost"? (2 points)

Bonus: Name the companies that developed each of these formats. (2 points each)

ACTORS & LINES

1987

"Private Pyle I'm gonna give you three seconds; exactly three-fucking-seconds to wipe that stupid looking grin off your face or I will gouge out your eyeballs and skull-fuck you! ONE! TWO! THREE!"

Name the actor and movie for two points each.

Bonus: Name the character speaking the lines (2 points),

SLOGANS & SPOKESMEN

1987

One of the major TV networks ran an ill-fated campaign declaring that "Prime time starts at 7:30!" while trying to cram some crappy sitcoms in before the typical 8 o'clock prime time start.

Name the network for two points.

Name the failed Suzanne Somers show introduced during this campaign for two points.

Good luck and thank you for playing.

Total points available: 18

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Oh, I never realized that. I couldn't imagine why you were asking people to use spoilers, since as far as I knew, they stopped working after post-crash restoration.

I just looked up "She's the Sheriff." It lasted 2 full seasons. Is that really considered "failed?"

Other shows have been cancelled after 1 or 2 episodes.

Spoiler
Home video cassette recorders (VCRs) were introduced in the 1970's and gained popularity in the early 1980s. Two types of VCRs (mainly) became engaged in a format war to sway users toward their technology.

Which format "won"? (2 points) VHS

Which format "lost"? (2 points) Betamax

Bonus: Name the companies that developed each of these formats. (2 points each) I'll go with Sony and, uhhh, Sony.

ACTORS & LINES

"Private Pyle I'm gonna give you three seconds; exactly three-fucking-seconds to wipe that stupid looking grin off your face or I will gouge out your eyeballs and skull-fuck you! ONE! TWO! THREE!"

Name the actor and movie for two points each. Ummm, was that was our favorite gunnery sergeant in Full Metal Jacket?

Bonus: Name the character speaking the lines (2 points),

SLOGANS & SPOKESMEN

One of the major TV networks ran an ill-fated campaign declaring that "Prime time starts at 7:30!" while trying to cram some crappy sitcoms in before the typical 8 o'clock prime time start.

Name the network for two points. Fox.

Name the failed Suzanne Somers show introduced during this campaign for two points. Three's A Crowd?
