Fire up the toaster!

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Wed Sep 09, 2015 7:56 pm

New York's sweep of the Nationals gives the Mets 78 wins this season. Philadelphia has lost 85 games so the Phillies cannot win more than 77 games and they cannot win the National League Eastern Division. Three teams in the National League Central Division have won at least 80 games so Philadelphia will finish behind at least two non-division winners. The toaster is alive and well. Philadelphia has been toastified. --Bob

Braves are next in line- they can probably feel the warm glow of the toaster coils right now.

It will be interesting to see how many National League teams get toastified before the first AL team gets eliminated. I see at least 6 NL teams that should beat any of their Junior Circuit brethren to the toaster, and quite possibly 8...

Only if Chicago also wins.

The calculations aren't as interesting this year as they have been in the past, at least not yet. Usually I have to take into account the future schedule, but Chaicago is so far ahead of the competition (and doesn't have any relevant games anyway) that no calculations are necessary.

The situation may be different in the American League, because there's a real dogfight in the American League West for the second wild card spot. --Bob

Atlanta's loss today is the Braves' 85th loss of the season so Atlanta cannot win more than 77 games. The Mets have won 79 games so Atlanta cannot win the National League Eastern Division. Three teams in the National League Central Division have won at least 80 games so at least two non-division winners will finish ahead of Atlanta.

By sweeping a doubleheader today, the Cubs became the third team in the National League Central Division to win at least 82 games. Cincinnati has lost 81 games so they cannot win more than 81 games. Cincinnati cannot win the National League Central Division and will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

Milwaukee and Colorado could be toast by tonight. Colorado by a loss or Dodgers win to eliminate them from the division (they are already out of the wild card running). Milwaukee would be toast with both a loss and Cubs win to take them out of the Wild Card (they are already out of the division).

Colorado's loss tonight was the Rockies' 83rd loss of the season so they cannot win more than 79 games. The Dodgers have won 81 games so Colorado cannot win the National League Western Division. Three teams in the National League Central Division have already won at least 82 games to Colorado will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

Miami and Milwaukee are now out.

San Diego is next on the list- we'll have to see if Oakland can edge them out and become the first AL team to be testified.

Miami's loss today was the Marlins' 82nd loss of the season so they cannot win more than 80 games. The New York Mets have already won 82 games so Miami cannot win the National League Eastern Division. Three teams in the National League Central Division have already won at least 82 games, so Miami will finish behind at least two non-division winners. Time to break out the boning knife. Milwaukee's loss today was the Brewers' 81st loss of the season so they cannot win more than 81 games. St. Louis has won 89 games so the Brewers cannot win the National League Central Division. Pittsburgh and Chicago also have won at least 82 games so Milwaukee will finish behind at least two non-division winners. Time to cry in your beers, Brew Crew. Milwaukee has been toastified. --Bob

Hanging over the toaster tomorrow:

AL: Oakland is toast in the division with a loss or Texas win; they are out of the WC with a loss and Houston win. The WC elimination combo will completely toast them.

NL: San Diego is completely toast with a loss. A win by both the Cubs for the WC and Dodgers for the division also completely toasts them.

Arizona is out of the WC with both a loss and Cubs win. They are out of the division with both a loss and Dodgers win. A loss combined with a Cubs and Dodgers win completely toasts them.

Oakland is already unable to win the division. Houston and Texas have three games remaining against each other.

Oakland's next loss (regardless of Houston's result) will make them the first American League team to join this thread, because the Angels still have 3 games left against Houston and 4 games against Minnesota. --Bob

I should note I don't take into consideration the future schedule when posting who's next; I just look at the E#'s for each team to determine when it's official.

Ex: The Cubs would rather not eliminate the D'Backs tonight since that would mean a SF win, but it is possible to knock them out by tonight.

San Diego lost for the 79th time this season so the Padres cannot win more than 83 games. The Dodgers have already won 84 games so the Padres cannot win the National League Western Division. Three teams in the National League Central Division have already won at least 86 games so San Diego will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

Teams now hovering over the toaster on Saturday are Arizona and Oakland.

Arizona got a scorch mark, but avoided a toasting by beating the Giants. However, they can now be dropped in the toaster by losing to the Giants or the Dodgers winning as Arizona is already out of the wild card. (My Cubs would prefer they beat SF to push them further away from the 2nd spot with the Dodgers also winning to help them tie with the Pirates for the 1st spot if the Cubs beat STL again.)

Oakland will be dropped in the toaster if they lose to Houston on Saturday as Houston holds the 2nd wild card spot, and would take them out of the wild card. They are already out of the division.

Our Cubs don't care a whit about SF. They may not officially be toast, but they're so far in the rearview that they don't think about them. And they're not admitting anything about the first WC spot until after this weekend - if they take the other two against StL, all they're going to be thinking about is the Central.

Houston's win over the As was Oakland's 85th loss of the season so the As cannot win more than 77 games. Texas has already won 80 games to Oakland cannot with the American League Western Division. Houston has won 78 games so the As also will finish behind Houston. Two teams in the American League Eastern Division have already won at least 81 games so Oakland will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

Put away those report cards, As fans. Oakland has been toastified. --Bob
