Get on a Game Show! My New E-Book

#1 Post by chad1m » Sun Sep 06, 2015 6:30 pm

I wanted to pass along that I've written a small new e-book, my first, called Get on a Game Show! It's available for pre-order on Amazon.com releasing this Wednesday. My game show exploits have been documented here numerous times, having been on stuff like Wheel of Fortune and Millionaire, so I decided to put it to use and write a small guide, helping people navigate through the general process of game show casting with sections on how to prepare for individual shows. Pricing is less than four bucks, free to read if you're part of Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library. Thanks for clicking the thread. :)

Four dollars? Marc Anthony DiBello would be rolling over in his grave if he were already dead.

Marc would have to charge more to pay for all the photographs of himself that would be included.

Do you have a chapter on how boring MAWGs can get on a show? :|

Congratulations on publishing a book. I commend anyone who pulls it off.

Here's to good reviews and strong sales.

Wow. I'm at a loss for words. I concede that running for President could be a good game show audition hook, but only after the election is over. No producer will cast a current declared candidate, due to equal time requirements. This kinda reminds me of the good old days when an eccentric character like Stan Fluoride got on the show, but I think he got on via the phone game, rather than by auditioning.

Chad, good luck with the book. It's unfortunate that someone at BuzzerBlog appears to be determined to undermine your efforts, but I don't think that will hurt you very much. And I agree with Marley, I hope you have some insights on how the untouchables like MAWGs and past game show champions can beat the odds and get on a show. But I recently met Marley and don't agree that he is as boring as he thinks he is. He has some great hooks if he can sell them effectively.

I appreciate that. My book might cost a couple of bucks, but it was worked on over weeks, not cobbled together over 2 days from other people in retaliation.

To my knowledge, Amazon doesn't let you insert excerpts, but if anyone's interested, here's a small snippet from one of the sections.
How To Audition

The first place a prospective contestant should always look is on that show’s webpage. All shows will post information about future auditions. Some shows even let you audition right on their website! In recent years, both Jeopardy! and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire have featured online tests, similar to those at in-person auditions. With Jeopardy!, to be on the show you still have to pass an in-person test; for Millionaire, a video audition and a good test score is good enough for them! Most of the big shows go on the road to audition throughout the year. The show’s website will have that information. If you know that your city will be one featured, check the website of the local station that airs that program. They’re likely to have more specialized information than the national site.

If you’re in the New York or Los Angeles area where most game shows tape (or are willing to travel there to audition), another great place to look that one might not even think of is Craigslist. Craigslist is a tool that can be used more than as a place to sell your used ottoman for ten bucks. Most of the big cities and their metropolitan areas have their own section on Craigslist, where buyers, sellers and job hunters can post what they’re looking for free. For the New York and Los Angeles areas, the places where you’ll want to do your searching is the “gigs” and “jobs” section. Doing searches for “game show” and “contestant” will usually yield you the best results and you can inquire within each posting about their audition. A big note is that if you’re not in these areas or not planning on being there at some point, you probably shouldn’t try to contact the posters as it will be useless. The postings in the NYC/LA areas are usually for localized shows that aren’t going to conduct contestant searches around the country.

...

No matter what method you use, one thing you want to make sure you look out for is if the show is a pilot or if it’s commissioned for a full series. Generally, pilot episodes are lower-budget versions of what could be a full show. Contestants that participate in these shows usually do not get the prize offered in the gameplay but rather a small fee for participating. If the show makes it to a full series, they sometimes invite pilot contestants to play on the real thing but this, of course, is never guaranteed. If you don’t mind that, go for it! But if you’re in it to make some money, it’s probably a good idea to avoid pilots.

Did you notice that despite having his GoFundMe account for over a month he has $0 in contributions?

Got it on my Cloud reader right now! Already the table of contents is looking quite exhaustive, and yes Marley, there's a chapter called "Am I Too Old?"

Congrats on your book! What was the process from writing to getting it published? Are you planning on a sequel?

Quite painless, actually. Writing took a few weeks and once my manuscript was finalized, getting it published through Amazon was pretty seamless. We will have to see how the demand is for book one before I think about book two. ;)

I did neglect to mention that the Bored gets a couple of mentions as a good resource for Millionaire preparation.
