RIP Al Arbour

NHL coach, lead the New York Islanders to their glory years of four Stanley Cups in a row from 1980-1983, has died at age 82.

He was one of the defensive anchors of the Blues team that went to the Stanley Cup Finals in their first three years in the league. He was an excellent shot blocker, dropping down in front of shooters, wearing glasses and no helmet. Great player, greater coach. RIP Al

I was a big Islanders fan back in the '70s but I never knew that Arbour had been a player before he was a coach. --Bob

Most coaches were players before, although sometimes not the greatest, to put it mildly. Tommy Lasorda comes to mind; I think he pretty much spent his career in the minors.
