Game #154: Lyrical Labyrinth

Below are lyrics to 100 songs. (Some are ridiculously easy to identify. Most of them are off the pop charts, but we make a few excursions elsewhere – even the dance charts.) Match them into 43 triples according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. 29 of the songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.

1. I had a friend was a big baseball player
Back in high school.
He could throw that speedball by you,
Make you look like a fool.

2. How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?

3. I will not be made useless
I won't be idled with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear.

4. How about a pair of pink sidewinders
And a bright orange pair of pants?
"You could really be a Beau Brummel, baby,
If you just give it half a chance.”

5. Smart and coy, a little crazy,
The kind of face that starts a fight,
Let me tell you ’bout the girl I had last night.

6. Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man.
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave, will you hold my hand?

7. Funky sounds wall to wall
We're bumpin' booties, havin' us a ball, y'all.

8. I'm not big on social graces,
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis.

9. I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone.

10. Yellow cab, gypsy cab, dollar cab, holla back
For foreigners it ain't for, they act like they forgot how to act
Eight million stories, out there in it naked
City is a pity, half of y'all won't make it.

11. If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you.

12. Well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash
As we fell into the sun
And the first one said to the second one there,
“I hope you’re havin’ fun.”

13. Who can take tomorrow,
Dip it in a dream,
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream?

14. If you should awake in the still of the night
Please have no fear
For I'll be there, darling, you know I care
Please give your love to me, dear.

15. Laying out another lie,
Thinking 'bout a life of crime,
That's what I'll have to do
To keep me away from you.

16. There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is
The bitter sting of tears.

17. If you could see what I have seen, oh-oh-oh-oh,
Broken hearts and broken dreams, oh-oh-oh-oh.
Then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh, but you don't care.

18. I can't do my homework and I can't think straight
I meet him every morning 'bout half past eight.

19. I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done, too.
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play.

20. After one whole quart of brandy
Like a daisy, I'm awake
With no Bromo-Seltzer handy
I don't even shake.

21. Her diary sits by the bedside table
The curtains are closed, the cat's in the cradle
Who would have thought that a boy like me could come to this?

22. My Maserati does 185,
I lost my license, now I don't drive.
I have a limo, ride in the back
I lock the doors in case I'm attacked.

23. You stand in the line just to hit a new low,
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go,
You tell me your life's been way off line,
You're falling to pieces every time,
And I don't need no carryin' on.

24. You talk, talk, talk to me
Your eyes touch me physically
Stay with me we'll take the night
As passion takes another bite.

25. So play, play for me
A sad melody
So sad that it makes everybody cry.
A real hurtin' song
About a love that's gone wrong
'Cause I don't wanna cry all alone.

26. The zombies were having fun
The party had just begun
The guests included Wolfman,
Dracula, and his son.

27. I need a love that grows
I don't want it unless I know
With each passing hour
Someone somehow
Will be there, ready to share.

28. So many promises
Never should be spoken.
Now I know what loving you cost
Now we're up to talking divorce
And we weren't even married.

29. Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also.
The body they may kill,
God's truth abideth still.
His kingdom is forever.

30. He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts,
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.

31. One night, me with my big mouth
A couple guys had to put me in my place.
When I see those guys these days
We just laugh and say, “Do you remember when?”

32. Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na
Na na na na na na na na.
Hey, that's what I'm living for!

33. Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure.

34. Say, there's a place in New Orleans
That serves fried chicken with turnip greens.

35. Now the first of December was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston.
Though the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting,
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go.

36. Mother told me always to follow the golden rule
And she said it's really a sin to be mean and cruel
So remember if you're untrue
Angels up in heaven are looking at you.

37. If you judge a book by the cover
Then you'd judge the look by the lover
I hope you'll soon recover
Me, I go from one extreme to another.

38. Move your body, oooo baby, you dance all night
To the groove and feel alright.
Everybody's groovin' on like a fool
But if you see me spread out and let me in
Baby just party high and low
Let me step into your erotic zone.

39. Listen boy
It's not automatically a certain guarantee
To insure yourself
You've got to provide communication constantly.

40. There are plenty of ways that you can hurt a man
And bring him to the ground
You can beat him, you can cheat him, you can treat him bad
And leave him when he's down.

41. No one I think is in my tree
I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right
That is I think it's not too bad.

42. Well the two men took to fighting
And when they pulled them from the floor
Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle
With a couple of pieces gone.

43. The town I live in, the street, the house, the room
The pavement of the city, or a garden all in bloom
The church, the school, the clubhouse, the millions lights I see
But especially the people
That's America to me.

44. Jerk it like you're making it choke
Break it like you're breakin' a code
Drop it till you're taking it lower
Drop it, drop it.

45. Thanks for the times that you've given me
The memories are all in my mind
And now that we've come to the end of our rainbow
There's something I must say out loud.

46. No we don't get depressed
'Cause here's what we call our golden rule:
Have faith in you and the things you do,
You won't go wrong,
This is our family jewel.

47. It's obvious you hate me
Though I've done nothing wrong
I've never even met you, so what could I have done?

48. So on we go
His welfare is my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me.

49. My guard stood hard when abstract threats too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect.
Good and bad, I defined these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

50. Babe, I love you so
I want you to know
That I'm going to miss your love
The minute you walk out that door.

51. Play all my records, keep dancing all night
But leave me alone for awhile.
Till Johnny's dancing with me
I've got no reason to smile.

52. High and dry out of the rain
It's so easy to hurt others when you can't feel pain.

53. Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we're gone.

Tonight, I'll lose my head
Tonight, I've got to get tonight.

55. I ain't stepping out of s**t, all my papers legit.
"Do you mind if I look round the car a little bit?"
Well, my glove compartment is locked, so is the trunk and the back
And I know my rights so you gon' need a warrant for that.

56. Goodness how they sway it
Uncle Joe, Uncle Jim,
How they pound the mire with vigor and vim.

57. Oh, some things I can't get used to
No matter how I try
Just like the more you give, the more I want
And baby, that's no lie.

58. The hurtin's on me, yeah,
But I will never be free, no, my baby, no, no.
You gave a promise to me, yeah,
And you broke it, you broke it.

59. Dog goes woof, cat goes meow,
Bird goes tweet, and mouse goes squeak,
Cow goes moo, frog goes croak, and the elephant goes toot,
Ducks say quack and fish go blub, and the seal goes ow ow ow.

60. Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly it's hard to breathe.
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed.

61. I just ordered up a beer and sat down at the bar
When some guy walked in and said, "Who owns this car
With the peace sign, the mag wheels and the four on the floor?"
He looked at me and I damn near died
And I decided that I'd just wait outside
So I laid a dollar on the bar and headed for the door.

62. I follow you around but you can't see
Too wrapped up in yourself to notice
So you choose to look the other way
Well, I've got something to say.

You better get your bags and flee.
You're in trouble boy,
And now you're heading into more.”

You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same,
The more you change the less you feel.

65. You think you're mad, too unstable
Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables
In a restaurant in a West End town,
Call the police, there's a madman around.

As it slowly rambles on and on.
No need in bringing ’em back
'Cause they've never really gone.

The world could change at the blink of an eye
And if anything, then there's your sign
Of the times.

68. I'm crazy for that lady
She's chic but she's not shady, yeah,
Sophisticated lady

She's so fine.

Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska, Opelika,
Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City,
Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity.

What you mean to me
Search your heart, search your soul
And when you find me there
You'll search no more.

I want to spend each moment of the day with you
Oh, look what has happened with just one kiss
I never knew that I could be in love like this.

73. Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

I shut my eyes
And I fantasize
That you're here with me.

75. On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life

There was sand and hills and rings.

After all that - this is what I found:
Nobody wants to be alone.

God I'm missin' you
Been runnin' blind, under a broken sky
With regrets I'm sorting through
But lesson learned baby, I made the turn.

The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine.
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted, he's a good holy man.

Filled with sadness, filled with gloom,
Hoping soon
That you'll walk back through that door
And love me like you tried before.

It controls me
Makes me do all the things I do for you.

May your guiding light be strong,
Build a stairway to heaven
With a prince or a vagabond.

'Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long.

And the Southern Central Freight
Gotta keep on pushin' Mama
'Cause you know they're runnin' late.

The breakfast garbage that you throw into the Bay
They drink at lunch in San Jose.

That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain

Hurry hurry hurry before I go insane
I can't control my fingers I can't control my brain

Watchin' all the cars go by, roarin' as the breezes blow.

Oh, tell me please, I gotta know,
Do you mean to make me cry?
Am I just another guy?

Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens.

99. As I walk on through this wicked world,
Searching for light in the darkness of insanity,
I ask myself,
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain, and hatred, and misery?

In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me.

Consolidating again. 88 down, 12 to go (plus errors, and some of the "solved" are missing artists)

UNKNOWN:

44. Jerk it like you're making it choke
Break it like you're breakin' a code
Drop it till you're taking it lower
Drop it, drop it.

56. Goodness how they sway it
Uncle Joe, Uncle Jim,
How they pound the mire with vigor and vim.

60. Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly it's hard to breathe.
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed.

64. Time is never time at all,
You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same,
The more you change the less you feel.

68. I'm crazy for that lady
She's chic but she's not shady, yeah,
Sophisticated lady
And she makes me feel good
She's so fine.

76. I've been there, done it, f**ked around
After all that - this is what I found:
Nobody wants to be alone.

77. This desert wind is burnin' my face again
God I'm missin' you
Been runnin' blind, under a broken sky
With regrets I'm sorting through
But lesson learned baby, I made the turn.

80. It surrounds me
Over me like a sea of madness
It controls me
Makes me do all the things I do for you.

82. I was knee high to a chicken
When that love bug bit me,
I had the fever with each passing year.

85. I wanted
I wanted you to stay
'Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long.

94. As every voice is hanging from the silence
Lamps are hanging from the ceiling
Like a lady tied to her manners
I'm tied up to this feeling.

96. Standin' on the front stoop, hangin' out the window
Watchin' all the cars go by, roarin' as the breezes blow.

We have Shake Your Groove Thing (#7) and K.C. and the Sunshine Band (#50), so all we need is Booty to complete a trio. Does anybody know where to get Booty? I'm putting out a call for Booty.

Destiny's Child did "Bootylicious". Ray Charles did "Booty Butt". Two possible places to find some Booty.

I was looking elsewhere for connections. Leo Sayer did "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing". ABBA did "Dancing Queen". And there's Juice Newton's "Queen of Hearts" to make a chain of three song titles.

From all the pain, I'm so ashamed.

BEAUTIFUL??? Christina Aguilera, if it is.

You are correct, ma'am. Funny how seemingly random lines can turn into a song if you know the right melody (or lack thereof in this case) to put to it...

Aguilera had the hit with it, but this was written by Linda Perry, of 4 Non Blondes fame.

I see a song with MASH in the title, and two artists named BJ and McLean.

I see either Empire or Empire State

I see Bewitched

Probably nothing.

I also see Frank Sinatra, who did New York, New York, and Empire State of Mind, and Billy Joel on here twice.
